The roar of the engine below the contestants shook the ship. The small spaces they had on the rusty old ship while traveling to the arena had decorations and belongings constantly falling over. Everyone was uneasy. This was the first time they would get to prove their worth to everyone watching, there was a lot of pressure, but great reward. One passenger however, was trying to make friends with someone, he was not an introvert.
"Hola amigo, how's the trip been so far?" Octavio Silva, or Octane said to the contestant known as Bloodhound. Bloodhound ignored him and continued sharpening a knife.
"It's been bumpy eh? Can't believe this old boat is still flyin! How old do you suppose it is? Like... 20 ye-"
He was interrupted by Bloodhound making a threatening move with the knife.
"Ok then, Te dejaré en paz. Sheesh!"
It was tough, Octavio was the kind of guy who liked to hang out with lots of people, show off and brag, get wasted, and compete. Surprisingly enough to him, this seemed to not be the place. Bloodhound wasn't his first try at making friends, sure he knew some people already, Ajay was his friend since... he forgot, it felt like a lifetime of friendship. The MRVN unit Pathfinder was friendly, but he was a little weird. Gibraltar was too friendly in kind of a creepy way, so he didn't hang out with him much. Sure there were other people there... he just didn't enjoy hanging out with them, or just talking to them. Bangalore was a tough weapons specialist who could get really sarcastic, she could be a pain sometimes. Wraith was a... well he didn't know what she was. She kept to herself a lot and would sit in a corner and shake her head frantically sometimes and grab the sides. Lifeline was childhood friends with Octane, they grew up on the same planet. He knew her as Ajay Che, he never called her Lifeline. Though they grew up together, she could get on his nerves sometimes. When he would want to have fun she would always shoot his idea down and give him a lecture, he left his parents for this reason, and she would bring that back. But they still got along well when Octavio wasn't getting into trouble. Caustic was a creepy guy, when you looked at him... you could see the dark in his eyes, and the evil plan he had in there. He would look at Octavio from across the room sometimes and Octavio could feel it, it felt cold and menacing. Then there was Crypto the mysterious hacker, Loba the thief, Rampart the minigun maniac, and Revenant the assassin robot.
The ship moaned and bumped a bit.
"Looks like we're arriving." Bangalore said.
Attention all contestants, welcome to the first match of the Apex games! You will see your banner appear on the screen with your squadmates banner along side. You will be pared up with them throughout the match. Good luck!
Another voice came in.
ETA, T-minus 15 mins and counting.
Octavio took a deep breath. This was going to change his life, he knew it. He would not be a junkie like everyone on his home planet told him. He was not going to work in some lame company and become a businessman. He was not going to be alone his whole life, looking back and wishing for a rush in life, excitement, and happiness. He would become an Apex... Legend. He would be a Legend that no one would ever forget. Octavio Silva would not be forgotten.
T-minus 3 mins. Random squad selection now beginning.
Octavio looked up and saw the first three members to make up the first squad: Lifeline, Revenant, and Gibraltor. Then: Octane, Pathfinder, Crypto. Then: Caustic, Loba, Wraith. There were only three squads, and a small arena, but once more people joined, it would grow.
Squads chosen. Arrived at Apex Arena.
The small, three person platforms lit up and the contestants took their spots. They were lowered through the floor and the arena was shown. Octavio examined it. It was in fact small, maybe 3 miles long and 3 miles wide? But he thought it was perfect. He looked down, his heart rate increased, they were really high up. And it was cold, windy, and slightly dark, and he only had a ripped short sleeve shirt and vest on. He felt scared and worried. Then he shook a bit... jumped around, and shouted, "Whooo hooooo! Lets do this!" to Pathfinder and Crypto. Crypto gave him a glare, but Pathfinder gave him a high five,
"Yes! Let's win friend!"
Octavio smiled a bit and took another breath. He realized that if he calmed himself down he would get scared again. But when he let his adrenaline run, he felt jumpy but ready for anything. So he jumped around a bit more. Crypto suggested a spot and they agreed. One team jumped. Then the next. Then Pathfinder and Crypto jumped. Octavio waited one more second, then took the jump that changed his life. He was now Octane, the first Apex Legend.
