Such Delicate Memories
I have only five seconds to process the fact that I've just killed three men and severely incapacitated Jack, before I'm running to Cayden. He's unconscious from what I can make out, and his energy is fading fast.
Lauren has made it to him before me, and she's desperately giving him chest compressions and breaths.
Luckily, everything about my powers has clicked into place right now.
It's raining, and that's because I'm fucking pissed. Thunder, lightning, hail.
When I get to Cayden, Lauren moves aside and lets me work my magic, literally. I push my own energy into him, and I will him to live. I've done this once before, I can do it again.
"You will not stay dead, damn it!" I shout.
He gasps when he comes to, healed only partially. "Oh my Gods."
"It's okay. Everything will be okay."
He's looking at me like he doesn't recognize me, like I'm the most amazing thing he's laid eyes on in his life. "You saved me," he says, sounding astonished. "I..."
And he passes out again.
And then, so do I, everything fading to black.
I wake up surrounded by people I don't recognize. Some of them are freakishly pale, and some of the pale people have white hair, or a white streak in their hair. The other half of the people in the room all look like beautiful, slightly feral, monsters. What's weirder, is that they're all looking at me as if they know me and are happy that I'm awake.
I look down at my hands. They're a pale brown. I wonder what I look like? What category I fit in.
"Uh," I manage to say, "What's with the scene out of a novel? What are you people?"
And then I think about it for a moment. "What am I?"
"Spencer?" a pale, purple-haired girl says cautiously. "What do you mean? Do you not remember us?"
"My name is Spencer? What a cool name. And yes, I don't remember. I don't remember anything about who I am. Who you people are. What we are. What I am."
She balks. "Oh my Gods somebody get the doctor."
At least five people go running for the doctor at once.
The purple-haired girl stays by my side. "This isn't good," she's saying. "This is so not good."
I blink at her. "What's wrong?"
She smiles kindly at me, eyes still worried. "You don't remember who any of us are?"
I nod. "Yeah. Sorry..."
She shakes her head. "It's not your fault. This sucks. Cayden's still on life support and you don't even know who you are."
"C-cayden?" I ask, the name ringing a bell. "He's...important. Right?"
The girl nods. "Yes, he's important. I'm glad you remember him."
I shake my head. "Sort of. I just know how his name makes me feel. Hey, who...are you to me?"
She smiles. "That's good. It's really good. It's something, at least. And let's just wait for the doctor to get here before we do introductions, okay?"
The five people that left return with a man who is clearly a doctor by the scrubs and coat he's wearing. He's got that supernatural look to him, the slightly feral one. His nametag says Dr Huang.
