A knock on the door. Who could it be at this time of night? The weather was awful on this cold December night, wet snow falling outside, the kind that leaves you soaked and frozen to the bone.
Neville left behind the warmth his fireplace provided and walked to the door. He opened it. In front of him stood his best friend.
'Ginny, what are you doing here? Is everything okay?'
'Can I come in?' Her tone was enough for him to understand that something was up.
'Of course you can!' He made way for her. 'Let's use a spell to dry you out and go warm yourself by the fireplace. I'll make some tea.'
A couple of minutes later they both sat by the fireplace with a warm cup of tea. Ginny, now dry, sat on the floor staring at the fire. Neville sat on the sofa behind her. He couldn't see her face.
'Gunny, did something happen? You know you're always welcome here but it's quite late so I'm starting to worry.'
'He left.' She blurted out.
'What? Who left?'
'Harry left me.' The woman finally faced her best friend. Tears were rolling down her face.
'What do you mean he left you?' He was so shocked and confused. Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley had been together since they were students at Hogwarts. They had three children together. An example for many. Neville thought they were happy.
'He left me… I'd seen it coming but I didn't want to believe it. I know he loves me, but he has never been in love with me.'
'Ginny…'
'I was so stupid to believe I could change the way he felt! I tried for years. He tried as well. But his heart always belonged to another. And now he finally mustered the courage to go after that person. I gave him years of my time, gave him three wonderful beautiful children, I was a good wife. But I was never enough for him. And I feel so stupid because I knew it! He was honest from the get go. He told me at Hogwarts that he loved this person. He never told anyone else beside me and I kept his secret because I wanted it not to be true.'
'Ginny, why didn't you tell me any of this? I could have helped.'
'No you couldn't, Neville. No-one could. Can I just please stay here tonight?'
'Of course you can. I'm so angry at him! How can he let go of everything you guys built for another woman?! What can this woman give him that you can't? Who is this skank anyway? It's not Chang, is it?!'
Ginny shook her head and faced the fire again.
'And you knew all along that he loved someone else? Why did you settle like that Ginny? This doesn't even seem like something you would do.'
'I never thought they would have the courage to get together! I always thought I'd be enough to make him forget, to make him fall out of love! I was such a fool. I should have known this would happen.'
'You couldn't know. He married you! He led you on! You shouldn't be sad, you should be furious with him and with her! She knows he's a married man! Who is she Ginny?!'
'Not a she…' Ginny looked Neville dead in the eyes. Her eyes sparkling with tears threatening to fall. Neville wondered if he heard that right. But he only had to wonder for a second before she continued. And what he heard next was something that really blew his mind. 'Harry has always been in love with Draco Malfoy.'
