"Hey Adam! Oh my god. I have missed you so much. It's been way too long since we've seen each other." Y/N said to me as soon as I opened the front door. She tossed her bag aside before wrapping her arms around my neck and hugging me tightly. I returned her hug, enjoying the familiar feeling it brought.

"I know bestie. But we're both always so busy. Unfortunately, we're not teenagers anymore," I replied happily as we walked into the living room together. Whenever I saw her again I realized how much I missed her.

Y/N and I had known each other since childhood. When she and her family moved to our neighborhood, it didn't take long for us to become inseparable. For me, she was like the little sister I didn't have. She was up for any fun, even if it was a bit rough during the games, she didn't complain.

And we have experienced a lot together. The first time sneaking away from home in the middle of the night, the first time we smoked together and tried alcohol. I was the one who taught her how to drive.

Y/N was also the one who always encouraged me to follow my dreams and work hard for what I wanted. When I doubted myself and my abilities, Y/N was always ready to cheer me up and motivate me. Either with warm words or a kick in the ass. It always depended on what seemed more appropriate to her.

"So tell me then. Did you happen to be in town for an appointment with a client or did you just long for me?" I wanted to know.

"Both. I figured if I had to drive the two hours, I might as well visit you. I'm glad you had time today" she replied and took my hand. She did that often. It was just part of her personality.

I had to admit that I enjoyed it every time Y/N held my hand or hugged me. All the little gestures meant a lot to me and I treasured every single moment. Because somewhere along the years of our friendship I fell head over heels in love with her. There was no exact moment when I realized it. It just happened. Gradually, piece by piece. I looked into her eyes one day and felt the warm fuzzy feeling inside me that could only be explained with love.

For quite a while I tried to convince myself that I loved her only as a sister or simply tried to suppress my feelings. Without much success. When I was finally ready to share my feelings with Y/N, it was too late. She was deeply in love with her new boyfriend and was so happy that I couldn't bring myself to say anything.

In my head I thought that I had no chance anyway and that I didn't want to lose her as a friend. So I decided to lock away my feelings inside me and think as little as possible about it.

The time flew by. We talked for hours. About just everything, everything that was new and about memories and of course also about one or the other embarrassment. At some point I just could not stand it anymore and asked the question that I usually always avoided.

"How is James, by the way?" I asked hesitantly of her longtime boyfriend.

"Oh, um, he's fine." replied Y/N, looking away from me. I immediately knew something was wrong.

"What's wrong, Y/N? What happened?" i inquired.

"If you must know.... He asked me to marry him," she replied after a moment's hesitation. At that moment I wished I had never asked, because I could already feel my heart aching.

"Why didn't you tell me right away? Congratulations!" I said with pretended joy and hugged her.

"Adam, I haven't said yes. Well, not yet anyway. I told James I had to think about it," she said softly to me. A small spark of hope formed inside me.

"Why?" I wanted to know.

"I honestly don't know. At that moment it just didn't feel right. I'm still waiting for that little voice in my head to tell me what to do." replied Y/N.

"Let's please talk about something else, okay?" she continued.

That's exactly what we did. It was late in the night when Y/N finally fell asleep on the couch. I knew from experience that it was best to just let her sleep and not put her in a bed. She would wake up and be more than grumpy.

I spread a blanket over her and then sat down on the coffee table in front of her. For a while I just looked at her. How relaxed and peaceful her face was. I loved the little smile that was lingering softly on her lips.

"I should have told you that I love you. I had a chance and I didn't take it. I wish I could tell you not to marry that guy." I whispered as I gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.

A few minutes later I gave her a light kiss on the forehead before retreating to my bedroom, cursing myself over and over again for not acting sooner.

When I went to the living room the next morning after a very restless night, Y/N was gone. No message or note. That was unusual for her. Immediately, the all-too-familiar hopelessness spread through me again.

I tried to call her a few times, but to no avail. What was going on here? Had I just dreamed it all?

I flopped down on the couch and buried my face in the pillow. It smelled like Y/N's perfume. So it wasn't a dream. This fact only made me sadder. Slowly and deliberately, I inhaled Y/N's lingering scent and slowly drifted off to sleep.

Suddenly I was jolted out of sleep by loud and persistent banging on the door. It took me a moment to remember where I was. A quick glance at the clock told me that it was already afternoon. Apparently I had fallen asleep once again.

I quickly went to the door to see who it was. In front of the door I was in for a surprise that almost made my heart stop.

"Y/N! Where have you been? Why didn't you leave me a message?" I asked anxiously.

"Please stop talking for a moment, Adam. Yesterday I told you that I was waiting for the little voice in my head to tell me what to do. And guess what... I heard it tonight!" she said quickly, her words almost tumbling over each other.

"So that means you've made a decision?" I wanted to know. I swallowed hard and prepared myself for her answer.

"Yes I did. I broke up with James," she said. I couldn't believe it.

"Why? What happened?" I asked, looking at her.

"Because it was your voice I heard, Adam. And in that moment, I realized who I really belonged to. And probably have always belonged to. I'm sorry it took me so long to realize it, but I love you too!" Y/N replied with a dazzling smile.

Speechless, I just picked her up and spun her around. I was sure that joy and love radiated from each of my pores.

I put her back on her feet and pressed my lips to hers without wasting any more time. That was all I needed at that moment. That was what sealed the deal.
