"In a few minutes, you'll be sixteen..." Mikasa's mother says, not being able to contain her excitement. Usually, things like this didn't excite her, but right now she couldn't deny how anxious she was feeling. Her hands were a bit sweaty, and her stomach hurt, all in a good way though. Constantly her eyes went to the clock in their living room, waiting for it to strike twelve.Originally she decided she'd find out her soulmate's first words to her in the morning, but it was her parent's idea to stay up all night and find out what they were once the clock struck twelve. Her parents seemed excited, and she didn't want to ruin their excitement. Now that it was so close to happening, honestly, she couldn't deny her excitement.
Finding out your soulmate's first words to you was a big deal. The person who you were destined to be with, no matter what.
"What do you think it'll say?" Her father asks Mikasa, who simply shrugs. "I don't know...it could be anything," she speaks softly.
"A few seconds left now..." her mother speaks.
The time had passed already?
"Let's count down to it!" Her father says, seeming equally as entertained as her mother. "In 3, 2, 1!" Her parents announce in sync.
"You're sixteen, Mikasa, what's on your wrist?" her mother asks, not being able to contain her excitement. Mikasa had tried not to show it, but she was sure her excitement and anticipation were leaking on her face.
She looks down at her hand, which covered her wrist. Any minute- second now, she would find out what words that are underneath it. Not just any words, the words that would be her first with her soulmates. The person she was sure to spend a lifetime with if granted.
They were still real people and their soulmates could die. She knew this. She knew that one day what brought them together could disappear if this special person ceased to exist. Still...her excitement was something she couldn't help.
Mikasa removes her hand which had covered her wrist. She looks at it, being thankful that there were words written there. Shortly after though, a small frown comes to her face as she realizes what the words were.
Both her mother and her father shoot glances at each other, curious about what words had their daughter looking so upset and confused. "Mikasa?" her father questions. "What does your wrist say, sweety?" her mother asks, trying to maintain her smile.
"Fuck you," Mikasa says, which causes her mother to pinch her arm. "Language," she warns but Mikasa shakes her head. "No mom, I didn't mean to cuss...it's what my arm says..." she trails, showing her parents her wrist.
And surely, the words fuck you were written on it. Her mother frowns, while her father just laughs. "I'm sure your first encounter will be very...lively..." her mother trails while her father continues to laugh.
Two years later and that memory was a fond one in Mikasa's head. It was one of her last ones with her parents, since 5 months after that they passed away in a car accident. Now, here she was, living with her grandmother Kiyomi in Japan. She had always lived in Japan, since the day she was born and since her parents died.
But now, here she was being shipped away.
"Grandmother," Mikasa says, her eyes laced with tears. She was sad, but it was mostly angry tears. She didn't want to leave the place she called home for so many years. "I don't want to go," she says, her arms crossed. She would be eighteen soon, wasn't she practically an adult who could make her own decisions.
"I'm sorry Mikasa but everything has been planned. You'll leave for the U.S in one week and you'll go to a boarding school there and hopefully college as well. I'll accompany you there myself." Mikasa sighs. "But why? It's my last year of high school for crying out loud! I have friends here! I have a life here!" She cries out.
