Nick ran for her life through crowded streets and down narrow alleyways. She didn't dare look over her shoulder as she flew down the streets. Her steps were loud against the pavement, her blood pounding loudly in her ears.
She heard shouting behind her, but she kept running on. Suddenly seeing an alcove, she ducked inside and wedged herself behind a statue.
Nick held her breath as she heard her chasers stop and shout around looking for her. She counted the heartbeats that echoed in her ears.
1..2..3..4..5..6..
Just as her vision was getting spotty from holding her breath for too long, they finally ran off, searching somewhere else for her.
"Let's go this way!" she heard a voice shout and the footsteps echoed only in her mind. She slowly let out a breath and shakily stood up, glancing around the alleyway.
She stared at what was grasped tightly in her hand, a small, jeweled bracelet. The bracelet was cool against her sweaty palm, and she tried to focus on the shine of the diamonds rather than her ragged breathing.Nick hadn't wanted to steal it... she hadn't wanted to steal anything ever since she first walked into the Harbaugh's home... but she had no choice. Her dad was counting on her to get the money... it was the only thing she could think of these days. Even at night, the thought plagued her.
So a few days ago, in a desperate state of fear and anxiety, she made a plan. She spotted a jewelry store a few blocks down from where she worked and had discreetly cased the shop and the jewelry inside. She had spotted the pretty little bracelet with a price tag of $6,500. Her eyes had bugged out at the ridiculousness of the price, but she was grateful to see something that she could use to help her dad.
So that was how she found herself in the dark alleyway, clutching the small bracelet that would hopefully save her dad... for a short while.
She sighed, angry at herself for what she'd done. She knew it wouldn't be long before the cops were on her tail, so she hurried down the alleyway and made her way towards a place she could hide for the rest of the day.

A week later, once she was sure she wouldn't be suddenly arrested, she hid it in a book, which she then placed in a package and sent it out to her father's prison, making sure to leave no return address.
That night, she stared up at the stars in the sky and tried not to think about how much they looked like the diamonds on that bracelet.
