*Aang POV*

It was my first day of high school. I was determined to stay happy. Or at least pretend to. Not that it was going to be easy. After the monks had told me I was the Avatar, everyone turned away and all of a sudden I spent all of my time training. I'd mastered airbending at twelve, and I knew I had to keep learning and training to keep my skill up, but at some point, training was going to break me. I still don't know why they told me at 13 instead of 16. Something about troubling signs? At this point, I was a bit scared to ask. Maybe it was the fires that somehow started at all four of the Air Temples at the same time. We'd only managed to get about a quarter of the people who lived there out. And that was 6 months ago. We'd gotten as many people onto the bison as possible (and Momo because he grabbed onto me) but there was only so much we could do. Monk Gyatso and I had moved to Ba Sing Se because it was quote on quote "The safest place in the world". The walls were there, but the fortified city had the world's most complicated caste system. The only place where it technically was null was at the public schools. Which also just happened to be boarding schools. But you could tell that people didn't care much about the rules. The students from the lower ring always got targeted from the upper ring students. I was living in the middle ring. I know there is a house for the Avatar in the upper ring, courtesy of Avatar Kyoshi, but Gyatso said we should avoid letting the world know that I was it.

But that was beside the point. I was starting at a new school. I just hoped that the world wouldn't judge me for it later. As I walked up to the doors, a student slammed into my back. They had long black hair with purple tips. But the most stunning feature was their violet eyes.

"Oh! Sorry! I didn't mean to run into you like that. I'm so clumsy!" They started picking up their books. I realize that most people would say she because of the fact that they looked female, but I knew that some trans people didn't have the same access to resources, so I start by using they/them pronouns.

"That's alright. Here, let me help you with that. I'm Aang by the way," I knelt down and started picking up their books. They smiled up at me.

"Thanks. I'm Nebula unless you're talking to my parents, then I'm Anora. But I prefer Nebula," They tucked all their books back into their bag. They smiled at me again.

"Sure thing. So I was wondering what your pronouns were," I knew it was best to get it over with because people preferred to not get misgendered.

"Oh! Thank you soooooo much for asking. People usually just assume I use she/her all the time. Mine are actually they/them but because my parents won't let me get a binder, I look female," They twirled around a few times before looking back at me. "Will you come to the office with me to get my schedule and dorm key?"

"Sure, I need to get mine anyways. Let's go!" I said and they turned around and started walking. We got to the office and walked in. There were two older women sitting there. They looked identical. The nametags sitting on their desk said "Ms. Lo" and "Ms. Li". They looked at us and pulled out a stack of papers.

"Hello, kids! Are you looking for your schedules?" The one on the left said.

"Just tell us your names and we'll have them ready for you," the other one responded. I decided to walk up first and get this over with. Praying to Raava that they didn't recognize my name.

"My name's Aang," I said, silently keeping up the prayer. I got lucky.

"Here you are deary," The right one handed me a schedule and a square. Nebula walked up. They crossed their fingers and sighed.

"Nebula please!" The left one ruffled through her papers for a moment and handed them their schedule and square. They let out a long sigh.

"Your dorm numbers are your dorm keys kids. Have a nice time at Ba Sing Se High," The two said simultaneously. We walked out of the office, both of us satisfied with the result.

A/N Hey guys. This isn't my first story, but it's my first time writing on Wattpad directly. Please don't judge me for my writing style. Also, if there are any spelling or grammatical errors that Grammarly missed, let me know. I tend to reread, but I want to get this out there.
