Brooke POV:
I remember bits and pieces of my real family. I remember my dad and his sea-green eyes. I remember my mom smelled like candy. I also remember someone always screaming in the background. I must have had an older sibling, even though I don't remember him/her. I remember how I lived in a small space. I have lots of memories of my mom, but almost none of my dad. My memories stop here. They say that my family died in a car crash. Now I live with foster families. Most kids don't like me. I only have 3 friends. Alli, June, and Basil. Basil just came here this year. He didn't have any friends, so I felt bad for him. I'd say we're best friends. Alli, June, and I are good friends too, but I'm not as close to them as I am with Basil.
*Ring! Ring!*
I checked my phone, Basil was calling.
"Speak of the devil." I thought to myself.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Hey. Brooke. We really need to talk." Basil said talking really fast.
"Baz. Calm down." Baz was my nickname for him. I'm not saying he liked it, but he had to deal with it anyway.
"So you know that summer camp I was talking about."
"I know but I don't think I can co-"
Baz cut me off. "I really need you to come. It's super urgent. I have paid for train tickets to get there and all that stuff-"
I cut him off this time. "But what about Lisa? She won't like me disappearing." Lisa was my foster mom.
"Lisa will understand. Anyway I'm coming over to your house in a taxi. I will be there soon put some food, clothes, water, and other necessities in a backpack. Only pack a backpack."
"Anything else?"
"OH! No packing any electronics."
He didn't hear me say, "Like I'm not gonna bring my phone. I'm not stupid. I'm bringing it you idiot." So he just kept talking.
"We will have to leave right away. Hurry up in your packing! Bye!" He said hanging up the phone before I was even able to respond. I quickly went up to my room. I packed as much clothes as I could. Before I knew it I heard the door bell ring. The door opened and I heard Lisa say, "Hey! I'm Lisa!. You must be a friend of Br-" Baz must have cut her off because she stopped talking. I heard some whispering, but wasn't able to make out much of what they were saying. Soon Baz came running to my room.
"You ready?" He said looking anxious.
"Yeah. What were you talking to Lisa about?"
"Doesn't matter. I'll explain later. We really have to go. Do you have some food? Money?"
"I'll get some." I said. I ran down to the kitchen and grabbed some granola bars and water bottles.
"You'll need these." Lisa said handing me bags filled with sandwiches and a first aid kit.
"Thanks Lisa." I said hugging her, then running back to my room. I grabbed my backpack and my purse.
"Let's go!" Baz said, practically dragging me out the door.
We took a taxi to the train station, and just made it on before it left.
"How come we couldn't take a plane? It would be faster, wouldn't it?" I asked him after we had been on the train for a while.
"Not enough money." He said. But by looking at his face, I could tell that it wasn't just that. I decided to let it go though. Soon we were both fast asleep, and we stayed that way until we heard screaming.
