I hopped back my veins ready to explode from adrenaline. I spun around in fear.
A man in a black suit stood with jet black hair in long easy waves, I stuck my hand in my pocket and dropped my eyes and took a step back and then forth- God I'm such an spaz.
"No sir, I'm so sorry I was just admiring it I promise."
I dared look back up in shame and in truthfulness, he gave a small tight smile practically saying "Sure you were" His eyes were cold, so cold. In color and in manner. A sharp jaw and tall build and skin as pale as paper.
"I uh.. Came here for a job request on a cleaning and maintenance job website... Is the owner around?"
His eyebrows raised and fell again, "Ah excuse me then, I assumed you were nothing but a common thief."
It took my brain about 2.5 seconds to connect that he had a British accent. British. Like James Bond. But even more formal and clipped, like someone in a Victorian movie. Common thief? Who spoke like that?
I managed a small huff of a laugh "Well... like I said I'm just here for a job."
I felt even more dumb, dear hell.
"Of course, of course, after all I hired someone to clean the place."
He said it with such nonchalance and arrogance I was confused to whether or not he was joking with me, I think he isn't.
He turned on his heel and walked to the grand staircase so I followed. The steps were marbled and the railing was gold. Such a beautiful place if I wasn't so damn awkward and if he wasn't such a hoity-toity rich stuck u-
"I purchased this fine abode not too long ago, I don't stay long though. It's a bit small for my taste but has a fine potential."
I nodded. Where was he going with this?
We turned to the right and the first thing I saw was a grand open master bedroom. It was exquisite decadently covered in emerald silks and satins and a dark black canopy bed sat in the centre of it all, paintings of scenery and forests lined the hallway and flickering sconces lit the room light enough for good vision but dark enough for secrecy. The floor was a mahogany wood with fireplace in the corner.
He noticed me with my jaw open wide at the sight of this room, he nodded.
"This is the primary bedroom- my own of course. If you find it a disaster, then cleaning it should be rather easy as I don't make much of a mess."
"It's amazing... The bed is huge."
And it was monstrous, piled in pillows and a dresser on each side. Gold edgings on each side of the black frame with heavy drapes and tassels and pooling black silk.
He scoffed, "Yes, I enjoy my sleep very much, don't you?"
"Of course I do. I have just never seen something so grand for something so simple."
"I have never liked simplicity, there should always be grandeur and fine attributes."
I had to agree, I loved things extravagant and fancy but this was a whole new level. He guided me down the hall to what could have been an office but seemed to be a mixture of a tea parlour and astrology observatory. The windows had brought in loads of sunlight and it was warm and comfortable.
"So have you chosen to take the job?"
I glanced back at him in slight confusion.
"Ye- Yes uh... do you want me here everyday at a certain time or... weekends?"
He squinted in thought and jerked his head to the side, "Everyday from 8:30 to 6:30 if that is possible, Soldays and Saturdays you have off."
I quizzically looked at him, "Soldays?"
"Sundays, excuse that I have previously studied Latin and tend to mesh pronunciation."
I nodded in agreement, even though that didn't sound Latin at all.
"Is there a particular time that would be best for my lunch break?"
He inhaled and looked around.
"I have a very fine tea parlour in which you can take lunch in, anytime you need and you may go out for 45 minutes to get other necessities."
I nodded again and he turned to face the large window overlooking the city.
"You may start tomorrow and I request of only one thing, please get good rest because there is lots of work to be done."
His voice was in the weirdest way... Soothing almost. He seemed to be the type of person who has their life together but he almost seemed tense right now.
"Well if I don't I might fall into that monstrous bed and sleep for a hundred years." I grinned wide baring my teeth and huffed a little laugh.I immediately regretted that, oh my shitting doves I'm a fucking idiot. He looked at me in the strangest way and I wanted to fucking die out the window.
He cleared his throat and nodded again adjusting his gaze back out the glass window.
"If you slept that long, you wouldn't get paid so this would be all for nothing."
I tried to mask my stupid girlish embarrassment.
"Mmm, you're right."
The awkwardness was going to make me rip my HAIR OUT, good hell. I hurried and looked at my watch to save my pathetic self.
"Well I better be going to my apartment, the movers just brought my stuff. I'll be here bright and early tomorrow morning at 8:30 with whatever needs done. Have a good day--ah I didn't get your name."
Holy shit I was feeling stupider and stupider as more peanut butter covered words fell out of my dumbass mouth.
"Lucien Dontrowe, and my gratitude for accepting this position, it will not be easy but you show promise."
I beamed a little, like when you get a good grade on a test and your grade is saved is how good I felt, excusing my shitty speaking skills.
"Thanks again!"
I waved and remembered the ways of the winding hallways and the giant staircase and the huge marble floor that made my heels click acoustically. I practically scampered out like a wounded deer. I threw open the doors and left the elaborately decorated porch in such a hurry I could feel a blister on my toe.
As soon as I was down the street I hissed in agony.
"I'm a fucking idiot WHO SAYS A BED JOKE IN FRONT OF YOUR BOSS!? You are the biggest dumbass in the goddamn state, innuendo really?! "Mmm, you're right?!?! I swear to God."
The subway trains were a few blocks away, this is for school Diana. This is for your future. Hah, that didn't change the fact that I still think I'm the world's biggest douche.
