Lamia didn't want to go to school.

She knew the main reason wasn't because of her studies or anything. It was all because she was going to meet new people; people she had never known before.

This change was nothing compared to the change she had to go through in the past few weeks. Lamia had been thrust into another family and found out she would have to live with a stepbrother. She knew she could bear such a minute change, or so she thought.

Assaf hasn't been much these past few weeks. He had been out with his school friends, as what she'd heard all along, barely getting time to interact with him as she'd mostly stay in her own room.

Mohammad was all buckled up, the black leather steering wheel gripped tightly by one hand as he took a turn, sighing at the traffic a few streets away from their school.

Lamia was in the backseat with Assaf, his bag in the middle between them and hers in front of her feet. She had consciously tried to calm her nerves by staring outside the window as the city passed by her eyes in a blur, the car too fast for her mind to keep up.

Or her brain had been elsewhere this entire time to even focus on what she had witnessed every passing second.

She yawned, turning her head to give Assaf a brief glance, only to catch him already looking at her.

The girl raised her brow in question, and her stepbrother only smiled before patting the top of his bag which was placed between them.

"You can nap," he said, his eyes crinkling. "We still have time."

Lamia only pressed her lips tightly, lowering her gaze to tear away the eye contact before shaking her head and looking ahead with a tired sigh making its way out of her plump lips.

Her reaction came off a little cold to him, but he shrugged nonetheless, focusing at the view outside his own window as Mohammad did on his driving.

"Almost there, Lamia," the man who married her mother spoke up. "We'll reach in about fifteen."

Of course, this wasn't the first time she was seeing this school. The girl had an interview here the other day before she was enrolled.

Once the car was parked, Assaf unlocked his door and got out as soon as Lamia did, slamming the door shut and jogging up to his father who rolled his window down with a heart-stopping grin.

"I'll see you both, okay?" he said with a wave of his hand, eyes focusing more on Lamia as he spoke the next words. "And don't be nervous. Just relax. Everything will be fine."

She could only nod while gulping, her small smile wavering as she looked down before parting her lips.

They both bid him farewell before turning around and walking towards the main gate of their school. Assaf noticed Lamia lagging behind. He could tell she wanted to be anywhere but here.
