Shield Knight

One morning, the day after I first heard about this cursed amulet locked away in the Tower of Fate, I was so intrigued I went there. I knew I had to destroy it, Shovel Knight told me stories about how its powers were so dangerous, it left entire civilizations wiped out from the face of the earth. As I was making my way to the amulet, I knew there was someone else here. Two people. One was worn-out and bearded while the other was energetic and dressed in a blue cloak. I didn't know their faces back then, but I did later. The bearded one was named Luan and the cloaked one went by the name of Donovan. They both entered the room where the cursed amulet was being held seconds before I.

"Is... Is that the amulet?" Luan asked in surprise.

I could hear Donovan's voice lift in a happy manner. "It's ours! Finally!"

I jumped towards the duo, ready to toss my shield. "Stay where you are!" I shouted to them. I tried to sound brave, but my voice wouldn't stop shaking from fear. "That amulet has powers beyond your control! I am here to destroy it, once and for all!"

Luan tried to reason with me. "But... I seek only to protect my son! My intentions are pure!"

I told him, "Protect him, then, only by fleeing this place and never looking back!" I knew the two weren't going to listen to me. Donovan pulled out a shiny weapon from his cloak and pointed it directly at me.

"Heh." he said. "You want it for yourself. You can't fool me. Luan, would you do the honors?" I braced myself for the attack.

Luan was much more reasonable than his friend. "Just a moment!" he exclaimed. "If what she's saying is true, then... Might we be a bit more cautious?"

Donovan had no reason within his soul at all. "You would let some pompous knight tell us what we can and can't take?! Who is this busybody anyway?"

I angled my shield towards him. "I am Shield Knight and I will not let you pass!" I announced as I threw my shield towards him. He jumped over it and slashed me with his bladed weapon. I tried to run into him but he ran back into me. Wherever my shield wasn't protecting, he would strike as hard as he could. I tried to strike him back, but my doing so, I wasn't protected. I jumped up to slam my shield on him, but to my surprise he only jumped higher. I ran into the walls, causing pieces from the ceiling to collapse, but Donovan didn't get hit. I only hurt him a few times, but he still continued to battle on, undefeated. The tower started to collapse, so we both put our fighting to a halt.

Luan shouted, "Donovan! The tower crumbles around us! We must leave at once!"

The negative Donovan replied, "I never knew you as a coward, Luan! We'll leave once we have our prize."

"Stay away!" I shouted desperately through the rumbling of the falling ceiling. "You meddle with forces you do not understand!"

"Please, Donavan," Luan pleaded, "I'm begging you! Leave the amulet, it's not worth it!"

Donovan was filled with too much greed at this unlucky moment. "Never!" he shouted. "Out of my way!" He struck his friend against the wall. He fell to the ground. Donovan pointed his weapon at me. "And you won't stop me either! Have at you-" the ground underneath him collapsed and I couldn't make it out of the tower on time. A bright light emitted from the deadly amulet. I covered my eyes, blinded. The next thing I knew, there was darkness. Nothing but darkness.
