"Huck, I-""Strawberry," He urged. "I know you heard everything I said to Ginger Snap. I meant every word that I said, and I'm sorry if hearing all of those things freaked you out. I've been meaning to tell you about my feelings for a really long time and I'm also sorry that you had to find out the way you did."
Her heartbeat increased in her chest, remembering the thoughts and feelings that made her uneasy when she first discovered the revelation.
"I have loved you for so long.. and I don't think I will ever stop loving you. I thought the distance between us would force me to move on, but I simply can't. You are one of the very few people I consider as my best friend, and I know that hearing what I said made you worry about us as friends. But, Strawberry, I am willing to take that risk -- and whatever problem or obstacle we have to face, we will face them together." He noticed tears falling down the girl's eyes, and he couldn't decipher if it was because she was extremely elated, or extremely melancholy. Either way, he panicked at the sight and held her hands tighter in his. "Oh, no, I'm sorry. I didn't say all of that with the hopes of you being upset."
"Huck-" She said with a small smile and sniffle. "I'm not crying because I'm upset."
The concern he had grew deeper. "Then why are there tears in your eyes?"
"When I heard you tell Ginger Snap how you really felt about me, I did get scared. I was scared to feel the same way you did, I was scared that I would be the one to mess things up between us, and I felt.. wrong or just not worthy for the love you have for me." She wiped the tears that stained her cheeks and the new ones that were about to form in her eyes. "I also thought the distance would force me to forget, but all I did was miss you every day. And hearing you say what you're saying to me now is giving me the reassurance that I need. I won't fight what I feel for you, anymore."
Huck let out a relieved sigh, moved closer to her and pushed back a piece of her hair behind her ear. "Don't."
Blushing at how close he was to her, she moved back a small bit. Huck didn't let go of her hands, however. "But Ginger Snap.."
"She came by the Fort a day after. She told me what you said to her, and then she admitted to me what she said to you that made you react the way you did. And I told her that if she didn't like who I let in my life, then I wouldn't be her friend much longer."
"What did she say?"
"She will take the time she needs to get over me, and over us being more than best friends. That is.. if.." He moved closer to her again, the pink tinge in her cheeks growing more and more dark. He then held his hand against her cheek. "Strawberry Shortcake, will you do me the honor of being my girlfriend?"
She didn't bother to answer his question. She leaned close to him, planted a small, yet soft kiss on his cheek and held her hand against it. She figured that would be enough for him to figure it out. The smile on his face proved her theory right.
"I love you."
She blushed hearing those words again. "Huck?"
"Yes?"
"I know it's early, but do you want to come inside and join me for breakfast?"
He kissed her on the cheek. "I would love nothing more."
He offered his hand to her, and she held it with no halt or hesitation of her own. They walked around the garden one more time before she had opened the front door to her house -- the both of them very much unaware of the semisweet adventure they were going to embark in their life together.
