I leaned my head against the window of the plane boredly, I couldn't wait to get back from California and see Joel again. It was nice to spend time with Rebecca though. The voice of the pilot came over the loudspeaker saying we were about to land. I smiled in relief. When the plane landed I quickly unbuckled my seatbelt and hurried off to retrieve my luggage. Joel was supposed to meet me there and I didn't want to keep him waiting.

I saw him waiting by the conveyer belt and waved excitedly. He ran and pulled me into a hug while spinning me around. He set me down and whispered in my ear, "I missed you Lacey."

I giggled dizzily and said, "I missed you too Joel." Then gave him a quick kiss on the lips and went to get my bags.

He trailed behind me and took them out of my hands when I got them. "I'll carry them," he said with a smile.

I smiled back and said, "Thanks, but I'm not helpless at least let me carry something."

He frowned and looked down at my things before saying, "Aha." And pulling out a tiny makeup bag. "Here you go," he said as he handed it to me. "Now let's go, I'm hungry and want to get something to eat."

I rolled my eyes at the little bag and said, "Ok, let's go." Then took his free hand in mine and walked with him to his car.

*Six Years Later*

I smoothed out my elegant black dress and smiled at the mirror. I did a little twirl and sighed in content. I was really excited for tonight; it was Friday night and Joel and my 5th anniversary. We were getting ready in separate rooms though so we could surprise each other.

My little four-year-old daughter, Maddi walks in and says in her baby voice, "Mommy, what's wrong with daddy?"

I look down at her and say, "What do you mean baby? There's nothing wrong with daddy."

She shakes her head and said, "No, there is, he's coughing a lot."

I crouch down to her level and say, "Maybe daddy has a cold or allergies, I'm sure he's fine."

She shrugs and walks out of the bedroom. I watch her leave and see little faded red footprints where she stepped. I call out to her, "Maddi, come back in here please!"

She walks back in and says curiously, "What?"

I point at the spots and say, "What is this from?"

She looks at them and says, "There was red stuff on the floor of daddy's bathroom when I went in there and I accidentally stepped in it."

I think Joel must've spilled a drink in there when I finally put two and two together -- Maddi asking if he was sick, the coughing, red stuff-blood- on the floor.

I look up and quickly run past Maddi and into the bathroom where Joel was getting ready to find him kneeling over the toilet coughing. I look around and see a small trail of blood leading to where he was, there was even a part smeared where Maddi stepped in it.

I turn and see Maddi behind me, watching her father curiously. I motion my hand towards the door and said, "Why don't you go play in your room for a bit, sweetie?"
