Summary:
April Henley knows – probably more than anyone – that when someone changes, they don’t completely and irreversibly change. They may look different, they may act different, the way they carry and present themselves may be different; but they themselves will not change.
The little things that seem to not matter, won’t change. Like the way he laughs. The way he rolls his eyes sarcastically. The way the tip of his ears become red when he’s embarrassed or nervous. The way he clenches his fists when he’s annoyed or angry. And sometimes… the way he looks at me.
When April Henley’s best-friend, Mason Bontelle, leaves to Germany for the summer, she thought the biggest difference in him would be a tan, maybe a new haircut. Never did she ever think that instead of coming back as her best-friend, he’d come back as The Mason Bontelle.

[Prologue || The Day From The Past]
The day it happened Mason was knocking and ringing on my door non-stop until I answered with bleary eyes and pyjamas. I remember thinking of different ways to kill him as I opened the door, because no-one - absolutly no-one - could break me and my comfy cacoon I called bed, without consequences.
"Guess what? You'll never believe what happened!" he shouted grinning forgetting to tune down his enthusiasm. He continued without waiting for my reply.
"My parents are starting their own car line. You know that car competion I told you about? Well, they won first place!"
"That's awesome!" I replied honestly, pushing my sleep deprivation out of my system. His parents were probably the best parents out there. The love and adoration in their eyes for each other and their kids- Mason, and their 4 year old daughter Rose- always left others speechless.
Mason had kept raving on and on about this big car competition - which apparently had a mega prize of being able to start your own car company, with all the expenses on the competition sponsors - for months. Mason's parents owned a car mechanics together and if anyone could start a successful car line, I had complete faith it would be that it would be them.
"Now lets go to your place, my dad finally bought me black-ops!" I said excitedly, putting an emphasis on finally, rolling my eyes. Now that I was no longer half asleep - due to an idiot who never understood my love for sleep, or my hate for mornings... and morning people - I decided I might as well start my day early, that way I could have more time to beat Mason's ass at video games.
See, there was one thing me and Mason agreed on, and that was how to a boring day a great day with only two things:
Video games and food.
And the good thing is we had finished our sophomore year a week ago, so we basically had all summer to enjoy this freedom and time. I tugged on his hand dragging him into my house.
He froze "Uhm, April? There's something else I forgot to mention.." I frowned at his nervous tone and turned to face him. He looked at my face and looked away quickly. I instantly knew whatever he was going to say was going to be bad. Very bad.
"We're going to Germany for the summer.."
"Huh?" I replied stupidly, not connecting the dots fully.
"Wait, what?" I shouted as I finally saw what he was coming to, totally forgetting all about being happy for him and his family.
"Well....My parents decided to start the car line there and decided to take us with them." By 'us' i knew he meant him and Rose. "But I'll be back before school starts." he continued quickly.
It took me a minute to digest what he was saying.
My best friend... was leaving.
My best friend of two years was leaving me.
My best friend of two years was leaving me ...for the two months of summer.
I mean I had other friends, but this was Mason I'm talking about. No-one could take his place.
"Why Germany? Why not here?" I almost shouted.
"Germany is where all the good companies start. Duh." He replied jokingly with a smile, but it slowly faded when he saw my face.
Mason has never gotten the fact that there are times when his jokes make me wanna slap him upside the head.
"Okay, so when are you leaving?" I said trying to contain my sadness and holding onto that thin thread of happiness for his parents.
"Now..." he replied quietly.
"Now ?" I shouted, throwing my arms in the air. Who cared about containing my sadness, I was angry now! Why didn't he think of telling me before?
As if answering my unspoken question, he said ""It was a last minute thing. My parents just told me, and they want to start it as soon as possible."
I looked out the window, and saw a cab waiting. A closer look confirmed my suspicions; his family was waiting patiently for him to finish talking to me.
"So this is good-bye?" I asked glaring. I've never understood why the word 'good' was in goodbye. I mean this was anything but good! The person who invented that word was probably really messed up.
"Yeah, but I'll be back before you know it." he replied.
"Don't miss me too much." he continued teasingly trying to clear the air.
"I'll try not to..." I whispered back but he was already out the door.
All that was going through my head was the thought of my bestfriend leaving for the summer. I was never really close with my other friends, because I had always thought it was always going to be Mason and I. No-one else could have a bond like us, and no-one could come in between that bond. But why did I have a feeling that it wasn't going to be the same? That he wasn't going to be the same? That nothing was going to be the same ever again?
