Reki POV:
When I was a kid I loved watching all kinds of superhero shows on tv. They were mostly fun and pretty tame, but once the hero asked "Do you know what true happiness is ?" Superheroes don't exist, but when I was a kid my only answer was no. I mean I have my family. But that's not enough for me. Is happiness being rich, or hooking up with hot girls, or getting into the best schools, or ranking higher in society. I guess that's what everybody else wants, but not me. I believe people make their own happiness, and mine is when I am skating. The weight of society fades away as the world rushes by, the wind glides over my face. I love this feeling. The feeling you get when you complete a jump or perfect a trick. That's the stuff, I love that stuff.
Being at school sucks ass, but you gotta do what you gotta do right? Besides, it isn't that bad. I stretch in a notebook I should have probably taken notes in but whatever. I hear my classmates mutter to their friends about a new kid. I scratch beneath my bandana and look at the "new kid". He's cute, he's tall he's this, he's that. I think he looks tired, the teacher asks him to introduce himself. He sighs before doing so." Uh, I'm Langa Hasegawa". He totally hesitated. The teacher looks at him again like he expects a speech on why he is here." I'm here from Canada". He must not like talking because he had barely anything to say. The kids in the class were totally wrong he isn't cute, I'm cute he's, he's just not that's all.
After school, I go to the shop where I work. Oka the owner of said skate shop brings up last night, and how it was fine. It was completely fine until that asshole Shadow tried to blow me up and lit my board on fire! I worked hard on that one too. It was my fault I lost, but he didn't need to burn my board. I finish emptying boxes onto the shelves and take my board out for a bit. The damage from last night wasn't that bad now that I look at it. I hop over a trash bag but the bag was ripped so I trip on trash I catch myself but manage to miss the board and it goes down the street. I chase it a little bit but then I see the new guy, wait!
" Hey, can you stop that skateboard! " He turns to grab it right away. I jog up to him.
" You saved my butt! Thanks, new guy!" He just looks at me with a weird look on his face.
" Hello? You there? I'm in your class remember" He apologizes, I wanna know if he skates I tell him to try it. He tries to make an excuse but I insist he wants to. He looks like he has no idea what he is doing. Is this guy for real? He has got to be doing that on purpose. He barely moved an inch!
" Yeah so? Maybe we shouldn't be standing on it!" How annoying I'm just ganna show him. I ride the board about three yards away then come at him, he ducks and I jump him. He looks shocked. I offer to take him to the shop, so he could pick aboard a practice. I offer this guy fun and he seriously asks for the pay. Does this dude really ask what's the pay? He needs a job. So he doesn't want a board great, new guy cant skate. Oka tells him we're hiring. I'm confused and annoyed. Yeah, my arm still hurts but that's whatever I don't need to be replaced by the new guy. But the new guy doesn't seem to care he accepts almost immediately.
Back at the shop Okatells him about our local skate scene. It is an old abandoned mine, where the best of the best compete. It's called the S, but a lot of people just go to watch. Oka has definitely got a date. Oka pet nips the new guy and I scoop him up only to be nipped myself, filthy trader. In the morning, Me and Langa I guess his name is. Head out to retrieve the sticker for a client. I explain how the S is a super-secret. I let him hold on to it once we get our hands on the thing. He gives me a half-ass reaction a one-word, cool. Damn right it's cool! I'm about to change his life!
In class, he listens to me while I talk about skating and how some people in the S go 60pmh down the hill at least and sabotage is allowed. He looks asleep. At lunch, I tell him how people bet what important, money, friendship....girls. Did this guy hear a word I said or does he just care about my bento box? After school, I show him I make skateboards, he impressed and I tell I know and it's hard. I tell him my goal about building an awesome skateboard and then winning a race with it. I gotta rush a pack my bag cause I'm running late. He nags me but I already know. He may be annoying but he is going to love this I mean who wouldn't.
When we get there he is looking all around and he's the one driving! I wanna know what he thinks but I already know it awesome. Our client opens the bag t find not his but a recked one, I must have grabbed the wrong bag! Shit, shit, shit! They want me to race on the recked board, me! Shadow is an ass, I already knew that but this seriously!? I'm not backing down though. Langa has his feet taped, yes taped to the recked board. What is he thinking! He said he figured he'd skate figured he ant even stand on the damn thing. I am gonna be the one to skate. But then out of nowhere The Cherry Blossom, the AI skater, says Langa will skate. I hope he doesn't get hurt.
When the race begins he barely moved. Then he starts using his hands, his hands! I can feel so much second-hand embarrassment right now. But then I can't believe it he's going fast and standing up!! I watch as Langa chases Shadow down and around the S. I am kinda impressed because this guy couldn't even stand on a board this morning. Cherry says that the way he skates is the way of a snowboarder It would make sense he is from Canada right? Langa and Shadow enter the final stage of the race. I see Shadow pull a hand into a fist He is ganna through mini bombs at Langa.
" Langa, Lookout!". He flys over it all the blast, the crowd, Shadow, all of it. It is breathtaking. Call me crazy, but I know what I saw it. Snowflakes began to fall right here in Okinawa.
He is amazing.
