I didn't know what happened at first

I was sleeping, curled in the sun, laying leaned against my mother, when I was suddenly hauled up. A scent I recognized, my father and leader, picked me up by my scruff and plopped me on the ground a inches from Mother. Mother  stiffened, her tawny ears spiraling back and her face contorting into a snarl. She stood up, her fur puffed up and her front legs spread in a fighting stance. My father, huge and scarred from fighting, was obviously stronger, but Mother didn't care. 

I could tell Father felt bad. His scent gave it away, along with his stance, and his eyes kept flashing towards Mother and to his paws

But he still did it. A few hours later, I fell asleep, passed out and so comfortable in the evening sun that even the loudest sounds couldn't wake me up, I felt the slightest discomfort on the scruff of my neck. The gentle swaying of me being carried lulled me to sleep, and the last moment of sun disappeared
