44. The Day after

Sunlight streamed slowly through the windows, filtered by the snowy clouds abovehead. I shuffled to the side on my uncomfortable chair and glanced around the class.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

All the students were present (though in various stages of mental decay). The teacher was droning on in front of the class.

There wasn't a ghost peeking through the wall, nor a Spirit playing hopscotch on the desks. The only sounds I could hear were the same as everyone else.

Ugh. How creepy.

Where was everyone? I'd only spotted a couple of Spirits all morning long!

After School, In the clubroom

"Hi, Craft," Toby said as I walked into the room. His head was tilted above a novel.

"Hi. What're you reading?"

"The newest Valentine Cladis novel! I'm a big fan of hers!"

My heart stopped. Waitwaitwait. Wait. Its o-kay. Nobody knows. Kyuu herself probably doesn't know. Yeah... She won't tell them, even if she does! Right...?

I turned to look at Kyuu, sitting opposite Toby, next to Jo. She lifted her head, suddenly paying attention to the conversation. Her phone cast an eerie blue-white light in the dim room.

"Ah. That's our Mom."

She said it! Curses! How did she even know?

A sudden, heavy silence filled the room. Toby almost dropped his book. Akin to a jerky robot, he turned to look at Kyuu.

"What?"

"Valentine Cladis is my Mom's pen name. Cladis means 'cataclysm'. And Valentine... I think its because her name is Veronica and she came up with it on Valentine's day? Right, Craft?" Kyuu asked me.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Ugh, kill me now.

"That's... I'm not sure. She never explained to me why she chose the name." I tried to avoid Toby's flaming eyes.

"CRAFT. You knew all this time, but you never told me your Mom was my favourite writer?" My friend exploded.

"Yeah... That's precisely why I didn't." Not to mention that something very... personal has to do with those stories of hers...

Toby was about to comment when the door was slammed open. In strode a beautiful girl, with long black hair, bright blue eyes and... a full-body 'whale' pyjama.

"Plum?" I asked, almost wondering if I was seeing things.

"Craft. I want you to tell me why T'Ko and that old geezer are in my school." She growled.

"Old geezer..? Oh. Issa-san. Well, he decided to start an advertisement campaign."

"Advertisement? That's why those two have been pinning these up all over school?!" She lifted an arm and showed me the paper in question.

Uwah.

It was horrible. A nasty scribble depicting a map through the woods to get to The Shop and a list of the most common services. All in all, a toddler could have done better.

"I feel embarrassed I work for him." I grumbled.

"Exactly. So you are going to march upstairs with me and we will give him a piece of our minds." Plum decided.

"Too late. T'Ko's been grumbling about them all day to Issa-san. And he heard from some ghost that you were angry at him so he left early."

Did that sound as if I knew too much? More than I should, humanely, be capable of? I hope not. That's right! Blame it on the all-seeing, irritated teenager who chats with things no-one else thinks exists.

"Drat." Plum cursed under her breath, twirling a strand of hair around her finger.

"Ah. Plum, where are all the Spirits anyway? I've barely seen any today."

"They're out having a snowball fight behind the school. It's quite fun."

"Sure sounds like it."

...

Tomorrow is another day.
