Chapter 1
My eyes twitched as Charlie Baldwin hesitated on picking me or the nerd for his dodge ball team. His finger pointed straight but unable to decide. With a sigh he pointed at Lowell Jones the short, lanky boy who could barely throw a ball.
I grunted with distress. The last thing I needed was to be with Sam Carlton, a tall bully who
never misses out on the fat kid joke. You see, I'm kind of a sight for sore eyes. Being an overweight middle schooler doesn't get you the benefit of the doubt. You get to sit with the rejects, the SPEDs and the losers.
Sitting next to a kid who has Down syndrome has become my only friend throughout my school years. He kinda looked like Beans from Even Stevens but otherwise, we've accompanied each other for quite awhile.
Communicating with each other was more difficult than playing patty cake. Along with his Down syndrome he also had Aspergers. It was an awkward situation where I had to write down what I said and he had to enunciate everything he said with a lisp.
In the middle of the court, I stood. An easy target 'cause of how wide I am. The whistle blew and balls came flying from left and right. The force of spheres coming at me made me stumble and fall backwards.
"Get your butt up Summers! Sit on the bench! You're out." Sam's annoying freckled face hovered over me.
I raised my chubby arms over my head and tried to get up. But unfortunately I was stuck like an awkward turtle.
"HAHAHA, those balls bounced off of you! You're much more bouncy than those dodge balls, Summers!" Sam chortled with his nostrils flared and mouth open like a wild boar.
I rolled my eyes and struggled to get up.
After Sam's horrendous laughter, he bent down and offered me a hand.
I ignored him and huffed and puffed vertically. Unfortunately, gravity wouldn't compromise. I stumbled back into the gym-sock smelling gymnasium ground.
I sighed in defeat as Sam once again chortled in demise. He rolled his head back like a grunting pig and laughed so hard that his eyes started tearing up.
Wiping off sadistic tears on his sleeve, he finally offered me a hand.
I took his hand as a sign of defeat as he started to pull me up.
With all his strength he pulled me up, eyes almost popping out of its sockets and arms shaking, he managed to get me off the ground
I finally got up, still holding his now sweaty palms.
I look at him and he smiled with pride. It was like he tackled a huge boulder and succeeded.
A couple of days later, Sam Carlton continued ignoring me. Back to the way it was.
I'd waddle down the hallways and he'd be there right behind me. Laughing and mocking me with his low life possy.
But this time I didn't mind. More like, I swooned in delight.
How did I even get to like him after how he's treated me in the past?
Well, it's simpler than you think. You see, when he had that look of accomplishment on his face from pulling me up with all his strength, his eyes glistened with excitement and his hair blew along with the wind.
At that moment, he looked absolutely majestic.
He was like a mythical creature that had sprung up from my sticker book collection and casted me under his spell like a genie in a bottle.
The thought made me gasp for air. What was this? A heart attack?
I clutched my chest as I felt my heart beat rapidly in my rib cage.
Whoa, this is hecka weird. My heart only beats this fast whenever I do P.E.
OH MY GOD.
This is the end.
I am having a heart attack.
No! This can't be happening!
"Hey fatty! Get out of the way will you!"
I turned around and saw Sam scowling at me.
Oh, those eyes. Those eyes that sparkled with accomplishment is now filled with torment and mischief.
"H-hey Sam." I stuttered.
All of the sudden I felt my heart beat a million times faster than it had been before.
I wasn't even listening to Sam's lecture. My cheeks just turned red and I did couldn't help it anymore
I reached for his face.
Why am I doing this?! I couldn't stop my arms.
I felt my fingers clasp the nape of his neck. His hair felt so soft.
Suddenly I was bringing his face closer to mine.
"What are you doing to me?!-"
His sentence was long cut off since I pulled him down to my mouth.
My eyes fluttered open as I found myself kissing his chin instead of his lips.
People stopped and stared.
He pushed me down to the ground and this time he didn't help me up.
