Here I am. Sitting on my bed by myself scrolling through facebook feeds on my phone. Its February 14th. Valentines day, but do I care? No. Definitely not. All I see is hearts on my facebook wall and people either showing off their cute gifts or nagging on and on about how they dont have a valentine. The post that keeps catching my eye is the one which says "Some people dont have a mum on mothers day, and others dont have a dad on father day, and your crying about not having a valentine." And if you think about it, its true. I dont have a mother. Shes dead and there is nothing I can do about that, but what I can do is make her proud. Get the grades, get a perfect job as an art teacher and wonder about what kind of adventure my life will take me. As I sat there dreaming, I heard my dad shouting from downstairs.
"Kaitlyn! Your friend Lilian is here. Come and meet her."
I invited her over because I'm the type of person who can't sit and do nothing all day. I have to do something, unless it comes down to homework or revision. This is when I get distracted and even staring at a wall becomes interesting. By the way its half term, which means that we have a one week holiday, so she can stay over one night.
"Kaitlyn, where are you? Dont keep your friend waiting!" My dad shouted once more, this time with a glimpse of anger in his voice. He likes to be obeyd from the first time.
"I'll be right there!" I respond loudly, as I chuck my phone on my bed and run downstairs. Lilian is my best friend. We do everything together. She tells me everything and I pretend that I tell her everything. There are some things she mustnt know because I dont want to ruin our friendship. She does get curious sometimes, and thinks that I dont trust her, but there are things in this world that are too private to share.
By the time I run downstairs my dad has already let her in. As soon as she sees me she runs to give me a hug. I have no idea why we hug when we say hello or bye, we just do.
"Hey, should we go to your room? I have to tell you something." I see the excitment on her face as she says this, and that rarely happens, so we go to my room, she puts down her bag on the floor and as soon as I sit down on my bed again she starts talking.
"So you remember the guy I'm always talking about?"
"Blake? How can I not remember him, when you have a crush on him and you talk about him 24/7." I quickly answer with a massive urge wanting to find out what she is going to say next.
"Well... He asked me to be his valentine. Today! Oh, it was so romantic.." Lilian drifted away in her thoughts and feelings.
I just sat there confused wondering if I should be happy for them, or sad that its valentines day and I dont have a valentine. Or would you call me jeleous? The thing is, I did feel a bit jeleous. Lilian is my best friend, and we mostly have the same classes in school. Both studying the same subjects in year 11. The reason for that is because Lilian had no idea what she wants to do, therefore she took the same subjects as me. If you would ask me to describe her, there is only one word that fits perfectly. Lilian is beautiful. She has stright, blond hair that falls down to her shoulders. Her eyes are bright blue, that turn green in the sunlight. I guess she does desserve Blake. Overall Blake is the most popular guy in our school. He is a football player and Lilian is the prettiest girl who can contol her make-up tools just like her ten fingers on her hand. I still dont understand why she decided to hang around with me instead of the other popular girls in our school. Im the type of girl who doesnt get noticed. You could say that I'm Lilians shadow in our school hallways. Maybe she feels sorry for me? She knows that I dont have a mother, and that I always get bullied for having ginger hair. Whenever Lilian is around, no one dares to say a word, but when she doesnt come school and I'm left on my own, its when I dread to be seen. As I said before, I dont get noticed by anyone except from Charlotte who keeps making fun of me. Am the weak link in her opinion, but hard to destroy because she always attempts and fails. I have my own ways how to deal with her.
"How romantic was it?" I ask with no empathy in my voice.
"Well, he asked me to meet him in this fancy restaurant, and when I did, he gave me a present." Lilian quickly took out a little golden box from her bag and showed me what was in it. There was a beautifull ring resting on a little, stuffed, black pillow inside the golden box. The ring was silver with a little heart shaped jewel at the front.
"Isnt it beautiful?" Lilian said calmly appriciating the ring inside the little box.
"Indeed, it looks amazing." I replyed.
We chatted for a little longer until Lilian got a call from Blake and went out to talk to him in another room. This was when I wondered if our friendship will last for long. Will she choose him over me? I hope not, because then I will have to deal with Charlotte. Such a great valentines day, isnt it.
