Though it was still only Friday in frosty ol' Michigan, I could feel Valentines Day creeping around the corner, ready to pounce at me and devour me like a starving lion.
"You're being melodramatic, Vicki." Jesse claimed as she strutted down the school hallway beside me.
"Says Miss Female Cassanova." I quip back sourly, blowing a stray blonde strand of hair out of my face.
Though she rolled her eyes, I sensed a flattered grin twitch at the corners of her lips. She slunk her tan, muscled arm over my shoulders. Albeit annoying, she was attractive and she knew it.
"Being single isn't that bad, Vick." She assured me cheerfully, attempting to lift my bitter mood.
I scoffed.
"Like you'd know anything about being single." I retort, ducking out from under her arm to get to my locker.
She continues beside me and leans against the locker nearest mine to the left as she tugs her leather jacket on. She chuckles, as if it were a joke. I crack a small smile. Her laugh was so carefree and bubbly. Melodious, almost.
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, we could hang on Singles Awareness Day. I have time to blow tomorrow anyway." She suggests.
I can feel her blue eyes pinned on me expectantly.
I switch out my books from my locker and stuff them into my bag whilst she waits for an answer.
"I dunno, Jesse," I sigh, slamming my locker with a loneliness-fueled force. "Don't you think Le girlyfran will get just the slightest bit angry with me if I borrow her bae for Valentines Day? Just because I'm lonely, doesn't mean you have to blow off all of your plans to aid me."
She shrugs. "Her and I weren't gonna go to the school Valentines dance together anyway..." Jessica explains, her tone low and almost disappointed.
Being her best friend of eight years, I knew she was hiding something from me. She was sad about something and I was determined to find out what.
"Oh?" I raise my brows at her as we continue down the crowded halls.
She rakes a hand through her long dark hair in exasperation. "Yeah. She's gotten super clingy lately. I told her I need space." She confesses, rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly. "Um, she says she doesn't like when I hang with you. Afraid I'm gonna pounce on you or something like that."
I giggle. "So your brilliant solution is to ditch her to spend Singles Awareness Day with me?"
She shrugs once again and holds the school's main door open for me, pretending to be a polite and helpful friend. As if.
"Thank you, my good sir." I slip past her and curtsey dramatically like the dork I am.
She shakes her head at me, though an amused smile crosses her face, her straight whites glimmering. "You're ridiculous." She sighs.
I nudge her playfully in the ribcage and, considering my weak and petite stature, she barely notices it. "Says you!"
"Hey, kiddo. Slow your roll. You're lucky to have my wise guidance and understanding. You should look up to me... even moreso than you already do." She proclaims with a cocky grin. I shove her. Though I knew it was a typical short joke aimed at me, I laughed anyway.
That's the thing about Jesse and I's relationship; we're polar opposites. She's a human mountain; I'm a human footstool. She's popular; I'm the chick that just kinda hangs on her arm all the time. She's a brunette (though mentally blonde); and I'm a blonde (though rather intelligent, honestly). She has the brightest, most energetic, ocean blue eyes that you've ever seen; I have tired, greying, blue eyes. She's muscular and athletic; I eat chips and play acoustic guitar for a living. She's dated nearly every pair of legs on the girls' soccer team; I've had one relationship in the sixteen years I've been alive.
