"I remember the first time I ever saw fireflies" muttered the old man, more to himself than to me. I tore my eyes from the beautiful light show that was taking place and looked at the man. He was staring off in the distance, smiling softly. It was my first time seeing fireflies myself, and I found it magical. I asked without fully realizing I was doing so.
"What happened?" He began telling the story without so much as looking away, and I turned back to watch the little bugs do their sky dance too.
"Well, when I was a young lad I lived in a small village with my mother and father, and one warm summer night they let me stay up far past my bedtime. I had been playing with another boy from the village on a hill above a river, but he had to go in when it got dark. I sat on the hill alone drinking funji juice when little dots of light began to fly around the hill. I finished the last sip of my drink and tried to catch them, it took me half a hour, but I had managed to catch six. I grew excited and ran home, to show my mother yelling 'Mama! Mama! Look, I've caught stars!' I was so excited. She just ruffled my hair and told me I was silly, and poked holes in the top of the jar. I kept them on my nightstand and watched them fly around in that jar, illuminating my room with their grace and beauty as I fell to sleep." I looked to the frail old man and tried to picture him as an excited child, and failed. He turned and noticed me studying him and gave a jolly chuckle, his smile crinkling his eyes.
"I believe it's time we go to bed, don't you think? You've got quite the adventure awaiting you tomorrow" he asked, changing the subject. I got up and started to follow the man back, but not before turning back and taking one more glance at the buzzing lights behind me.
