"The game -- they say a person either has what it takes to play or they don't. My mother was one of the greats. Me on the other -- I'm kinda screwed." A dirty blonde grey-blue eyed woman, Meredith Grey, in her 20s wakes up on her lucky penny colored couch with two mango colored pillows with a flowery design on them, gets up and picks up a thin blue dolphin colored blanket off of someone that's sleeping on the floor and wraps it around her naked body and picks up one of the pillows off of the couch and drops it on the man that's sleeping on the floor who is also naked, Derek Shepherd. He has hair that's not short but not long, the perfect length, great facial structure, and he's just all around hot. Meredith picks up her clothes that were on the mahogany wood floor, Derek picks her black bra and says "this is, uhh..." Meredith snatches it from him and completes his sentence with "humiliating on so many levels. You have to go." Derek invited Meredith back down to the floor with him, (if you know what I mean). Meredith replies with "No, seriously. You have to go. I'm late, which isn't what you want to be on your first day, so... goodbye, um..." Derek fills in that sentence with "Derek" Meredith resumes her sentence "Derek. Right. Meredith." and they shook hands. Meredith then runs up the spiralish stairs to get ready for work. She then leaves her cinder block color sided house in a white button up blouse and khaki pants with her black bag, and runs down the stone steps out to her blue car.
She slips into the orientation that's starting in the hallway, and stands behind a woman with black hair a little longer than shoulder length, wearing a black shirt with a camo green jacket with black jeans, and a man with short medium brown hair, wearing a horizontal striped polo shirt with a zip-up jacket and medium gray pants on. She gets in just as the Intern Speech starts. "Each of you comes here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. A month ago, you were in med school, being taught by doctors." Now they've moved into an empty operating room(OR). "Today... you are the doctors." All the interns are looking around in awe at the OR with a light navy blue OR table in the middle, cabinets and shelves that are filled with surgical supplies everything from scalpels to head lamps to every type of surgical clamp. "The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst years of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you. Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play... that's up to you." (Meredith voice over) Like I said... I'm screwed.
Meredith puts on her light blue scrubs and her white coat, puts her hair up into a tight bun on the top of her head, and puts her stethoscope around her neck. The other interns are being called to go with their residents: "Okay, Martin, Robinson, Bond, Hawkins." Remember that woman I mentioned earlier with the black hair that's Cristina Yang and that guy with the short brown hair that's George O'Malley. Meredith says "Only 6 women out of 20." In response to Meredith a woman says "Yeah. I hear one of them's a model. Seriously, that's gonna help with the respect thing?" Meredith asks "You're Cristina, right?" Interns are still being called to go with their assigned residents: " Patton, Monroe..." As Cristina is putting her own white coat on and her hair up into the same tight bun as Meredith she asks "Which resident are you assigned to? I got Bailey." In reply from Meredith " The nazi? Me too." A man who overheard them said "You got the nazi? So did I. At least we'll be tortured together, right? I'm George O'Malley. Uh, we met at the mixer." Walking over to Meredith and Cristina putting his stethoscope around his neck, continues " You had on a black dress with a slit up the side and strappy sandals. Now you think I'm gay. No, I'm not gay." Cristina has started walking away from George while he continues. "It's -- It's just that you were -- you were very unforgettable." Still interns are getting called: "O'Malley, Yang, Grey, Stevens." Walking over with the other three interns that were called with him George says "And I'm totally forgettable." Cristina asks the man that was calling all the interns "Bailey?" In response the man says "End of the hall."
Walking down the hall Cristina says "That's the nazi?" Looking down the hall at Miranda Bailey (The Nazi) a little shorter than average height african-american woman with a dark brown pixie cut haircut wearing light blue scrubs, her white coat, and light purple clogs, George says "I thought the nazi would be a guy." Meredith says "I thought the nazi would be a nazi." "Maybe it's a professional jealousy. Maybe she's brilliant, maybe they call her the nazi because they're jealous. Maybe she's nice." says Isobel Stevens, a blonde haired woman with bangs, light blue scrubs, white coat, magenta stethoscope, and the complexion of a model. Cristina says "Let me guess -- You're the model." Isobel gives her a scowl and says to Bailey holding out her hand"Hi, I'm Isobel Stevens. But everyone calls me Izzie." Bailey just looks her up and down, then says to the four of them "I have 5 rules. Memorize them. Rule number one -- Don't bother sucking up. I already hate you. That's not gonna change. Trauma Protocol, Phone List, Pagers -- Nurses will page you." Bailey starts to walk and the four interns scramble to grab a Trauma Protocol, Phone List, and Pager, and they follow Bailey as she continues her rules. "You will answer every page at a run -- a run -- That's Rule number two." They are now crossing the hospital on the catwalk (not the runway) Bailey still talking "Your first shift starts now and lasts 48 hours. You're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop, and don't complain. On-call rooms -- attendings hog them. Sleep when you can, where you can, which brings me to Rule number three. If I'm sleeping, don't wake me unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number four -- The dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed someone you would have woke me for no good reason. We clear?" Meredith raised her and is called upon "Yes?" Meredith says "You said five rules. That was only four." Bailey gives her the same look she gave Izzie. Then her pager beeps and she says "Rule number five -- When I move, you move." She runs to answer her page and yells down the hall "Get out of my way!"
They are on the flight deck as a helicopter is landing with a patient. Bailey asks "What do we got?" One of the guys in the helicopter with the patient says "Katie Bryce, 15-year-old female, New onset seizures, intermittent for the past week. I.V. lost en route, started Grand Mal seizing as we descended.
They took Katie to a patient room. Conversation on how to treat the patient starts: Bailey: "All right, get her on her side. Izzie, 10 milligrams Diazepam I.M. No, No. The white lead is on the right. Righty, Whitey -- smoke over fire. A large bore I.V. don't let the blood hemolyze. Let's go!" Katie stops seizing because the diazepam is a paralytic and the monitor starts beeping normally. Dr. Burke comes into the room (he is a tall african-american male with dark blue scrubs (he is an attending) he has short black hair.) he says "What do we have? A wet fish on dry land." Bailey: "Absolutely, Dr. Burke." Dr. Burke: "Dr. Bailey, let's shotgun her." Bailey: "That means every test in the book -- C.T., CBC, CHEM-7, Tox Screen." "Cristina, you're on labs. George, patient work-ups. Meredith, get Katie for a C.T. she's your responsibility now." Izzie: "Wait. What about me?" Bailey: "Honey, you get to do rectal exams."
Izzie snaps on a pair of gloves and squeezes out a cold, thick, clear gel on to her fingers and sticks those fingers into a patient's rectum. Meanwhile, Cristina is peeking in on a surgery as Bailey looks at the OR window and sees Cristina standing there. Bailey pulls down her mask and walks over to the door, opens it and says to Cristina "What are you doing here?" Cristina replies "Katie Bryce's labs came out clear. There's nothing in the results that explain her seizures. I just thought you'd want to know." Bailey says "Okay" and starts to pull her mask back up and close the door when Cristina says "I heard every year, the attending on call picks the best intern and let's them perform a procedure during the first shift." Bailey gives her the look. Cristina finishes by saying "I'm saying it's what I heard." Bailey says "Go away... now."
George is finishing checking a patient's breathing and tells his wife "Yeah, sounds good." The wife says "He'll be fine? You'll Be fine." the husband then says "If you don't count the fact that my bacon days are over, sure."
