"I ran off the plane

that July ninth

The beat of your heart"

Evelyn's grandmother had been sick for a while, so, it was no surprise when she received a call from her mom telling her she needed to come home. Evelyn packed a small carry-on suitcase, at three a.m. after receiving the call from her mother.

"are you sure you don't want me to come?" Jack asked worry was filling his eyes.

"Yeah, I'll be okay." Jack nodded his head in response and watched as she picked items out of their closet. Jack drove her to the airport around five, and she was on a plane home by six.

She touched down in Vancouver and greeted her mom at the airport. Her mother's warm embrace sent her spiralling, "I love you mom." she sniffed into her shirt. Her mom rubbed circled on her back and pulled away from her only daughter.

"I love you too baby." Her mom smiled weakly and grabbed the suitcase from Evelyn.

The taxi ride to the hospital was quiet. Evelyn didn't dare to ask what was wrong. The pair took a quiet elevator ride up to a room where Evelyn's grandmother laid peacefully on a bed. beeping machines surrounded the frail woman.

"Hi nana," Evelyn spoke, coming into the room,

"Oh, Evelyn dear, How lovely to see you. My, you've gotten so big!" Her grandma smiled at her.

"Yea, I have nana." She rested her head on the bed beside the old woman, tears running down her face, "I love you nana."

Evelyn's grandmother had passed on July third. There was a small service a few days after, and on July ninth, Evelyn flew back to LA to see Jack. The whole flight home her body ached. Her chest felt heavy, and her arms weak.

She ran off the plane with her small suitcase and scanned the airport, She spotted Jack immediately and ran. His eyes met hers and opened his arms as she collapsed into him. He held her in the airport for a few minutes before they went home.

~~~
Evelyn sat at the piano, waiting for the boys to come back with food, plucking away at some keys and trying out more personal phrases while she was alone.
I do recall now, the smell of the rain
Fresh on the pavement
I ran off the plane
That July ninth
The beat of your heart
Jumps through your shirt
I can still feel your arms
"Holy shit Ev! That sounded great!" Evelyn whipped her head towards the new voice in the doorway,
"Jonah?" She called out, "What the hell are you doing here?" She saw the boy walk in, a smile stretched across his face.
"I went to the house and couldn't find Corbs and Dani so, I called them and they said they were with you."
"And so you came over?"
"Well no, I got food with the boys, then came over." He replied. Evelyn nodded her head and heard the other two come in with food.
"Evelyn!" Jonah said, "Play the verse you were just singing!" Evelyn laughed and set her hands over the keys. She played a short intro, then sang the verse she had finished while they were out.
"That was great Ev!" Daniel said from her small kitchen, "come eat and we'll figure out what's next!"
The four of them sat in Evelyn's living room, eating burritos and listening to the news in the background. "I think it's time to add the chorus,"  Daniel said, standing up. Evelyn nodded her head and shoved the last bite of her burrito in her mouth,
"Yeah!" she said, "let's do this thing!"
