11. The Book of Nympharum
We are in her office again. I sit down. The clock ticks upon the wall. I wait for what's coming.
"Hayley, now that you've settled yourself in for a new beginning, as I said when you first arrived, this is a special school. We all, well almost everyone except the few humans, have gifts - powers if you will. We are all the same and that is why you are here."
For some reason I didn't accuse her of being insane or lying, it wasn't a shock but I certainly didn't see it coming. My reaction was neutral. I was a bit numb to tell the truth.
"I understand, things do feel different around here" I stated.
"Well Hayley! I've never had a student take this news as well as you"
"Please explain the rest, all of it. I want to know, I need to know. What the hell am I?"
Giving up on the charade she gave in and got to the point.
"Hayley, we're not human - in most ways yes, partly - but things are different for us" she began.
"Well, humans obviously don't know about us but back in the centuries there were the few that found out about us - and that's how all the rumours about angels started..."
"Wait! We're angels?" I blurt.
"Not quite but partly, what humans describe as angels is basically what we are, they just got the races mixed up. We are fae, we are faeries as odd as that sounds but that is what we are. Humans have the completely wrong perception of us in these modern days, just the same as their theories on angels. We are not human nor angel, we are somewhere in between the two, so yes we are angelic."
The disbelief made its entrance about now.
"It's a lot to take in, and I know you've lived as a human for all your life but you're going to have to adapt and face up to what you are. You're a Faerie, I'm a Faerie - we are fae."
"Does that mean one of my parents was an angel!?" I gasped.
"No, no. There are very few angels that live on the earth plane and even fewer faeries that have directly descended from angels. It was most likely that your great great multiplied by ten great grandmother or grandfather was an angel, or even a distant relative, you may barely have the blood in you but that doesn't make you any less of a faerie, doesn't make or break how good your gifts are. From time to time faeries just seem to 'pop up' even if just distantly related to the angel, it's all a matter of chance really."
"But how did you know I was different?"
"There is a lady here that can tell you a lot more than I. She is an elder and they have unique powers that allow them to know, see or visualize a faerie where ever they might be. Then we take them here so you can learn about what you need to know and can complete the change. The elders are also known as guardians"
"What's the change..."
"Here, you'll need this - read as much as you can and give it back any time. It will tell you everything you need to know." She offered it out eagerly.
I took the book, not knowing what to say. I knew it was the truth but it was complicated.
"Wait Hayley, hide the book, not everyone at this school is like us - there are humans here"
"How do I know who's human and who's not?" I ponder.
"Instincts, you would have got the feeling when you came here, a warm sort of 'belonging' feeling - hard to explain isn't it, but now that you know what it means it will be more prominent and you'll be able to distinguish with ease."
