Dorian POV
It had been a month since Celaena left for Wendlyn and Dorian still had no clue why Chaol had come up with the idea of sending her to kill the royals of Wendlyn. And to top that off Aedion Ashryver had returned to court. Dorian had never really liked Aedion, and neither did Chaol.
There was a knock at the door and when he opened it Chaol was standing there with a note in his hand, his eyes were rimmed with redness and Dorian could already tell that something bad had happened. "What is it?" he ordered, "Apparently the boat Celaena was on never made it to Wendlyn. It sank and there were no survivors." Dorian's heart sank immediately, he couldn't believe it. Celaena was dead. They had just lost Nehemia and now Celaena was dead too.
Later that day Dorian was in a meeting with his dad who was already looking for another champion. But Dorian didn't listen to anything that was said, he was just empty. There was supposed to be a ball this evening but Dorian didn't want to go, he wasn't in the right state of mind to do so. Aedion would be there and Dorian knew that he wouldn't be able to handle his attitude today, not now. But he didn't have any choice, he was the crown prince and it didn't matter that he had lost a close friend he still had to do all of his duties. He would probably even have to dance with all of the ladies that wanted to dance with him.
He was at the ball and fortunately no ladies had asked him to dance yet though it might be because he was sitting there almost scowling at everyone. Chaol was standing close to the throne, he too had to come even if he was grieving. He had stationed some of his best guards in the room and outside.
Aedion POV
He didn't want to attend the stupid ball and he didn't really have to but he knew that if he skipped this one, he would still have to attend the next one. Aedion had never really liked balls but it had been better back when he still had his family, when they were still alive. Tomorrow Aedion had a meeting with Ren and Murtaugh, he had found them on the first day he was here. They were rebels and Aedion gave them as much information as he could. He knew that they were playing with people's minds by saying that Aelin was alive and that they had found her, because they hadn't found her and she was most likely dead. Aedion had never let himself hope, he had always known that there was a possibility that she was alive, because they had never found her body. But laying in the back of his mind there was still a tiny, tiny glimmer of hope. A hope that he had to make go away.
