When Ethan refilled his coffee for the third time, he heavily considered going to bed. After all, he had been searching for hours, and absolutely nothing had turned up.
With a sigh, he sat back down in front of his computer, the blue light scratching his tired eyes. He pulled his browser history back open. "Near death experience", it read, alongside " Almost drowned experiences", and "seeing self while underwater".Without much hope, he reopened the search concerning near death experiences. The stories from the people who experienced such a thing were all similar; a bright light, a calm state, seeing somebody close to them, floating above their body. If he had to guess, most of these 'real experiences' were directly taken from books or movies. He knew that 'near death' didn't actually fit his experience, but he didn't know where else to start.
He closed the tab and switched over to 'almost drowned experiences'. A link on the third page caught his attention. The article talked about a monk who meditated next to an underwater temple. According to him, he had visions of 'himself on the different roads of life.'
Ethan suddenly felt fully awake. The article featured an interview, in which the monk explained that for every decision you make, what would happen when you chose differently is stored in your subconscious as well.Sure, it was reaching for threads, but it also was 1:38AM, and Ethan was ready to grab for every thread he could find.
He wondered if there was any scientific backup for this. Sure, it sounded esoteric, but the subconscious has been proven to exist, right? To his surprise, it was not only that, but they had also managed to find the exact location of it in the brain. The next hour flew by, filled with information about brain halves, the cerebellum (that's the part where the subconscious is), and freudian theory about the self.
When he finally stepped back from the computer, Ethan realized that not only had he not found any more about the topic he originally had been researching, but also that it was past 3 AM, and he would have go get up and drive to Marks place tomorrow.Cursing the ways his brain worked, he turned the computer off, and went to bed. That way, he'd at least get a bit of sleep.
