Chapter 18 - Surprising News

Fury waited in his office. He was waiting for the avengers to just barge in, weapons drawn without even thinking about it. He looked over at Tony and smiled at the sight of the child. He was curled up on the chair, hugging his figure close and drooling. He walked over and carefully picked Tony up into his arms to avoid him falling off the chair and hurting himself. He felt Tony shift a little to get comfortable in his arms before settling and snuggling close.

Oh, how he missed Tony like this. When he was small enough to hold close and make sure he was well protected from any threat. He missed spoiling him. But adult Tony still had a place in his heart. He just wouldn't express it to him since Tony never wanted him to express it, especially near the other avengers. He ran a hand through Tony's hair gently as he held him close.

After a few more minutes of just him and Tony, the avengers barged in, weapons drawn, exactly how he predicted. He sighed as he looked at the group of them.

"Fury. Put Tony down and we will not hurt you." Natasha says, glaring at Fury and pointing one of her daggers directly at him.

Fury rolled his eye and kept his hold on Tony. They didn't have a clue about his and Tony's relationship. But it was probably best to tell them now so they could understand why he's been keeping them from leaving.

"I am not letting you leave with my Godson without me knowing that he has had a proper check-up and is okay." Fury states as he looks at Tony, shushing and rocking him gently when he started to stir a little.

Tony did settle back down and remained fast asleep from the rocking. He then looked over at the avengers, who were all silent and lowering their weapons. They were just staring at him with very confused looks on their faces. Fury waited for them to all gather their thoughts from the floor.

"Wait. You're To-" Fury cut Steve off before he could finish his sentence.

"Yes. I am. Howard made me his Godfather when he found out he was having a son. Mostly because he didn't want to take full responsibility as a father so he could just drop him on me whenever he wanted." Fury says as he looks at Steve. "And no, that isn't because he was looking for you. He was just a terrible father." He says to reassure the man it wasn't his fault.

Steve nodded at that. He was mostly glad that Tony did have a kind of father figure that wasn't cruel to him.

"Now, I would like an apology for you all not telling me what happened straight away, for not allowing me to get the SHIELD doctors to check up on him, and for barging in as you did with your weapons out." Fury says with a glare at the team.

The team all looked down at the ground, ashamed of what they did and they all muttered an apology. Fury took it, knowing it probably wasn't going to get a better one from them.

"Why didn't he tell us that you were his Godfather? That is useful information for us to know." Clint says, crossing his arms.

"He didn't want to tell you and I didn't want you to know either." Fury says with a sigh.

"Why didn't you want us to know?" Clint pressed more and Fury rolled his eye.

"Would you like everyone to know that your rightful guardian is also your boss? Also, Tony wanted to protect me from being targeted by his enemies." Fury says, hoping that would appease Clint.

Clint nodded a little at that. He didn't understand why Fury would need protection from Tony's enemies. But it did make sense that Tony was trying to protect the people he cared about.

"How did I not figure it out? The signs were there that you and Tony had more than a working relationship." Natasha says as she thinks about all the times she's seen Tony and Fury interact.

"Either way, I do not want any mention of this when he is an adult again. He didn't want you to know." Fury says, watching the team nod at that. "I will pass him over now, please take him to the labs with the doctors. And I mean the robotics lab. I know he hates doctors and I want to make sure he doesn't think that he's getting a check-up." He says as he passes the sleeping Tony over to Steve.

Tony shifted a little as he was moved from Fury's arms to Steve's but he didn't awaken. He snuggled close to Steve and started drooling on him. The team nodded at that.

"Of course director. We'll take him there. Sorry, we assumed that you wanted to hurt him." Steve says before the team left the office.

Fury sighs as he watches them leave and sits on his chair, picking up the photo book and looking through all the photos he had of him and Tony when he was growing up.

Steve and the rest of the team were all walking toward the lab. They were mostly just glad that Fury wasn't going to harm Tony and that Tony had a father figure growing up. Steve was worried that Tony grew up without much of a positive influence in his childhood. He rubbed Tony's back gently and felt him shift a little. He looked down and saw that Tony was starting to wake up. The child yawned and stretched a little, rubbing his eyes with his free hand and holding his figure in his other hand. He slowly looked up at Steve and then there was a big smile on his face.

"Steve! You came back for me!" Tony says and hugs Steve tightly.

Steve chuckles and hugs him back.

"Of course we did. We would never leave you behind. Don't ever wander off again like that though. You need to tell someone where you are going." Steve says, watching Tony's face drop a little.

"Okay...But you didn't tell me that angry pirate man was Uncle Fury!" Tony says as he looks at Steve.

"I didn't realise. If I had known, I would've told you." Steve says and Tony nods at that.

Tony looked around as they walked, a little confused.

"We're not going home? Where are we going?" Tony asked as he looks up at Steve.

"We're going to a lab." Steve says as he looks down at Tony, who seemed a little confused.

"What kind of lab?" Tony asked.

"A robotics lab." Fury says, causing Steve and the rest of the team to jump as they didn't hear him sneak up behind him.

"Yay!" Tony says, all excited and bouncing a little in Steve's arms.

"Sir, when did you get behind us? We know where we're going." Natasha says as she looks at Fury.

"Clearly you do when you've gone the wrong way." Fury states
