Beep* beep*beep

The sound of the alarm echo through the empty house.

Meredith rolled over with a groan and hit the button to silence the load bellowing noise. Before she could move her sore stiffened body from the bed an arm reached out around her waist.

"Derek i'm going to be late... which isn't what you want to be on your first day of work" she exclaimed while staring into her husband's ocean blue eyes.

"You know I could always use my rank to get you out of trouble so we can finish where left off last night" he said while giving her his biggest and dreamiest smile.

"No!" She said while gently slapping his arm and jumping out of bed.

"We agreed not to tell anyone about us" she finished.

"I know but think about all the fun that we could be having right now instead of you running around like a lunatic" he chuckled.

"Goodbye Derek" she said while leaning in to kiss him before running out the door.

She arrived at the hospital and slipped in the back of the OR with the rest of the interns to hear Chief Webber's famous speech.

"Each of you comes today hopeful, wanting in on the game. A month ago you were in med school being taught by doctors. Today, you are the doctors. The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you. Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play, that's up to you." He said while giving Meredith a questioning look.

She had known him since she was a child. He is also the reason she is here. He offered Derek a job he couldn't refuse which is what lead her back to the hospital she used to wandering the halls of as a small child.

They were all sent to the intern locker room to change into their scrubs.

She had her wedding ring hanging on a chain around her neck. Derek and her had decided to keep their marriage a secret from anyone who didn't already know for the time being with only Derek, herself and Richard knowing about their relationship. This also meant that she was going to be going by 'Dr. Grey' not 'Dr. Grey-Shepherd', like she would have preferred.

But it was their best option considering most people would consider her to be favoured or treated differently and Meredith was already going to struggle under the pressure of being Ellis grey's daughter.

While wrapping her stethoscope around her neck, she glanced around the room, taking notice of how many males were around her. Glancing to the Asian women beside her, she said "Only six women out of twenty".

"Yeah I hear one of them is a model. Seriously, that's going to help with the respect thing." She replied

This reply made Meredith instantly connect with this women she thought that maybe they could build a friendship.

"You're Cristina, right?" She said briefly trying to recall the women's face and name from the intern mixer the night before.

The women nodded her head as the booming voices of residents filled the room calling their intern's names.

"Which resident are you assigned too? I got Bailey."

"The Nazi? Me too." Meredith said. She had already been informed of the resident nickname by Richard and honestly he seemed a little scared of her which slightly unsettled Meredith.

"You got the Nazi? So did I" A male's voice said from across the room. Both women turn to see the person who spoke." At least we will be tortured together, right?" He spoke again. Both women looked away from he, finding the conversation awkward but he kept talking." I'm George, George O'Malley. Uh, we met at the mixer. You had  on a black dress with a slit up the side, scrappy sandals".

Meredith slightly smiled shooting glance to Cristina before before looking back at him. She could vaguely remember but Derek was also at the mixer and he had been watching her and making face at her from across the room the whole evening. Realisation hit George like a bus." Now you think I'm gay. No, I'm not gay."

Cristina walked away with an unconvinced 'uh-huh.'

"It's - it's just that you were - you were very unforgettable." He stuttered out.

Meredith was feeling very uncomfortable by the conversation. She began to think about what Derek would do to this poor intern in he saw what was unfolding in front of her.

Thankfully, a man's voice started calling more people interpret the very uncomfortable conversation Meredith was thrust into. "O'Malley, Yang, Stevens, Grey." The voice called.

Meredith quickly escaped and walked toward the man that had yelled her name and Cristina. Cristina was asking directions to Bailey.

"End of the hall" He told her. Both Meredith and Cristina turned to see a small black women leaning against the nurses station that was writing in what looked to be a chart.

"That's the Nazi?" Cristina questioned.

"I thought the Nazi would be a guy." George said.

"I thought the Nazi would be a... Nazi." Meredith continued.

"Maybe it's professional jealousy. Maybe she is brilliant and they call her the Nazi because they're jealous. Maybe she's nice." A blonde women spoke while rushing to join the group.

Cristina gave the women one look before saying " Let me guess, you must be the model."

The look that she received was enough to answer her question.

The blonde the turn and stuck out her hand toward Miranda "The Nazi" Bailey. "Hi, I'm Isobel Stevens but everyone calls me izzie." She announced in a very cheerful way.

Dr.Bailey looked annoyed and uninterested and started speaking while walking through the hospital "I have 5 rules. Memorize them. Rule number 1. Don't bother sucking up. I already hate you, that's not gonna change.Trauma protocol. Phone lists. Pagers. Nurses will page you. You answer every page at a run. A run! That's rule number 2. Your first shift starts now and lasts 48 hours."

"Your interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop and don't complain. "

"On call rooms. Attendings hog them. Sleep when you can, where you can. Which brings me to rule number 3. If I'm sleeping, don't wake me unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number 4. The dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed someone, you would have woke me for no good reason. We clear?"

Meredith didn't want to stand out from the crowd or agitated 'The Nazi' but she had said there were five rules and only stated four. She raised her hand.

"Yes?" The Nazi snapped visually annoyed.

"You said five rules. That was only ... four." Meredith stated.

Right then her pager rang. She looked down at her pager that was attached to the waistband of her scrubs. She pulled it off and read the message. She looked back up at her four interns.

"Rule number five. When I move, you move. Get out of my way!" She said while pushing past them and running down the hallway.
