It was a silent morning, not one soul was heard
I was watching the ship rotate. Questioning the reason for my loneliness, but "everything must come to an end eventually" or at least that's what my father used to tell me, just the memory of him causes me pain and makes me remember how I lost him.
I got up from where I was and went straight to the classroom, preparing myself for all the glances and whispers that I would feel next as soon as I walked through that door; It was the same every morning since my father died.
Looks of amazement, sorrow, envy, discomfort, even fear, although I didn't understand why. Everyone around me believed they held the right to give opinions about my life without worrying to get to know me as if it were yours.
As if it were not enough to put up with all these people. I still had to go to work in the workshop to survive and get money for the week, the unique good thing about my days was to be capable to spend my night's training with Bellamy. Who would suppose that the boy and I would become so close that we would even be good friends?
Once I joined the classroom I could sense all those glances, whispers, and mockery. I didn't give them the importance, wasn't worth it.
Nobody was going to help at the end of the day, I needed to learn to survive on my own. I only had myself whether I wanted to or not. I had to accommodate that new reality.
Each time I walked through the corridors I would no longer be the commander's daughter id be the orphan whose father was the traitor or at least that's how the chancellor ruined and stained my family's name. And that will be something that you can never forgive...
Someone collided with my man and that made him come back to reality and put my thoughts aside, I could see that it was a blonde girl and once we made eye contact her gaze captured mine, those eyes like the ocean captured my attention. eyes like the forest. My attention was caught and what the rest of the class I could only think about...
At the end of the class, I could visualize her leaving the room in the crowd but I couldn't reach her, I was wondering who is she? Was she new to the class by any chance? Or had I been distracted enough not to have noticed her earlier? Those questions flooded my thoughts. Before I could leave the room, the teacher stopped me and asked me how I was dealing with my father's loss and told me that the chancellor requested my presence for the same reason. The only thing that was going through my head was how dare that man called me after what he did to my father.
-Lexa! remember that when you meet him you must act respectfully and you need to show respect. For you and everyone in the ark, he is the top authority.
-As if that mattered to me ... Why would he want my presence if for him my father was a "traitor" I doubt that he needs the presence of the daughter of a traitor.
-I don't know the reason why he sent you to call but please be polite with him.
-It's not like disrespecting someone who cares about whether they float me or not...
-Even if you don't believe it, some people care about you even if you don't want to see it.
-As you say, I'll go to the Chancellor.
*****
Once I went to the office I thought that the next day I would ask the blonde her name maybe there was some specific reason why she caught my attention.
I knock on the door
- Come in
-Were you looking for me, Chancellor?
-Woods, I understand your situation. I may know something of your opinion about more decisions, you may not like me or you may like me, but I am your chancellor.
-...
-For what I must admit, you have always been one of the best in your class, you have not broken any rule as far as I am concerned and you are of legal age.
-Are you going somewhere with it?
-Be patient, you will see I know your mechanical and leadership skills so a group is being organized where I will personally select the best young people from all of Arcadia for a future exploration trip to earth.
-As far as we know the earth is radioactive or at least they have taught us that, but I suppose it is a lie, right?
-I knew that choosing you was the right option.
- Does this have something to do with being the last Woods?
-Your last name has nothing to do with what happened to your father, the board has been planning this for two years, we have been analyzing all young people both in their knowledge and in their survival skills.
-I see...
-But because you are the best so far your group will be small and you will be the first, so that is precisely why I cited you, you will leave in 8 months so from tomorrow you will have to take specific training in which you will not be able to miss or they will be sanctioned and remain as traitors and you know what happens to traitors Woods.
-Me and who else?
The door opens
-She is Veronica, a systems engineer, in case of any mishap she will take care of the technology.-Understand...
-Will will take care of everything related to the weapons and the cargo that they will carry, and finally, Lexa, commander of the squad, will take care of all the technology and strategies that the squad must do. They depend on you Woods.
-You forget a small chancellor detail.
-This is Woods.
-Each member must be trained for hand-to-hand combat and with all the respective weapons we will not only go to unknown lands but we do not know if there are survivors and if so what are their intentions regarding us, we will be strangers and strangers to them if there are survivors.
-Good thinking commander, as I told you before. Training will begin tomorrow and Lexa, from classes to training, I don't want to see you distracting you, much less, I need you focused.
-Yes Chancellor
