My brain swims in memories. I look down to see I'm in a white gown. I see flashes of my earliest memories and some of my most recent. As my brain wakes up I realize I'm in a room full of doors. They have weird symbols that I've never seen before.
I walk down the hall, not knowing which door I showed open. All of a sudden a door glows. The symbol on it is like a triangle with 3 swirled lines on it. I twist the doorknob and walk in.
Once I'm inside, the beautiful sun blinds my sight. I realize I'm outside, in a park that Lily and I used to go to. I look down to see that I'm smaller, like when I was a child. I walk around the park, and then I see him.
Douglas, or Robin right now. He's running toward me with such happiness. I feel my body do the same. And soon we're hugging each other.
"Delilah, I missed you. Where's Lily?" He says as we pull apart. He looks around with a smile.
"She's sick, her mommy says she can't come until she feels better." I feel my lips move. I feel myself smile as Robin grabs my hand and pulls me toward the swings. I remember we would do competitions to see who could go higher. He always won but he would give Lily and me a chance to try.
"I'm gonna win!" I say as we sit.
"Nuh-uh, I'm gonna win!" He says. we both push off and start to swing. As he gets higher I feel myself getting higher too. It's as if he's pulling me with him. He starts getting tired and gets lower to the ground, but I keep going. I feel myself smile as I continue to push myself.
And then, the world seems to slow down. I can feel myself get thrown from the swing. When my body hits the ground I feel myself being pulled back toward the door. Suddenly I'm standing in front of the door as it closes.
"What the actual hell just happened?" I say out loud. As I step away from the door another door lights up. As I walk toward it I can see the symbol. It's a line with 2 circles on top of it and a triangle at the bottom. I turn the knob and walk in.
It's our old house. Lily is in her room as I walk out of mine. I hear my parents quietly arguing. I look down and see my pajamas from when I was 16. I walk closer down the hall toward the living room to hear what they are saying.
"Rick, we need to tell the girls. He was their friend." My mother whispers harshly.
"No Beth. They'll find out soon, just not yet. They'll go to his house and bother his poor parents. They've dealt with enough people bothering them." My father mutters back quietly. I hear him shuffling through papers and my mother groans.
"Rick. Rick, please. Just listen to me. They need to know. Before it's too late. I don't think they're asleep. Maybe we can tell them now. " My mother suggests.
"NO Beth. I'm not telling them right now. He just died. And that's final!" My father yells. I yelp from the loudness and walk out from my hiding space.
"I-I came for some milk, do we have any?" I stutter.
Shit, why am I so nervous. 'They could be talking about anyone' I say in my head. I control my breathing as I walk over to the small kitchen. I open the fridge, and of course, we don't have milk. So I grab a water bottle instead.
"I think Lily and I are gonna head to bed in her room, goodnight. Love you guys." I say as I speed out of the room. I walk into Lily's room as she begins to light a blunt. I sit on her bed as she blows the air away from me.
"What's wrong?" She says as she looks back at me. I look up from where I was staring.
"They're hiding something from us. But I don't know what it is. They said someone died, but they didn't say who." I blurt out. She looks at me like I just sprouted 2 heads. Then she passes me the blunt. I hit it and blow out a puff of smoke. I sigh and close my eyes. I open them and I'm back at the door as it closes.
Suddenly I'm at the end of the hallway. The symbol on the door is a broken heart with 2 lines in the middle. My hand shakes as I reach for the knob. I open the door. I see my mother and father on the couch. They look sad. Lily walks into the room after a few seconds. She looks nervous. And I become nervous too.
"Girls, your mother and I have something to tell you. It's important," My father says as he sighs.
"It's about Robin. He...He..." He begins to stutter. His shoulders shake as he rubs his face. My mom rubs his shoulders and looks up at us.
"Girls, Robin passed away." She says. I feel my heart drop. I look at Lily, and her eyes are filled with tears. She shakes her head and covers her mouth before she could scream. I turn back to look at my parents. My whole body goes numb. I blackout, and when I come back I'm on my way to Robin's house. Lily is on my tail. I hear my parents screaming for us to come back. But my mind is focused on one thing.
I make it and knock on his door, praying and hoping that he's the one who answers. Instead, his mother opens the door with a tear-stained face. She sniffles and looks up. Her eyes meet mine and I break down. He's gone, really gone. I drop to my knees and scream. Lily drops to her knees too, her sobs are muffled by her hands. My eyes close as the tears fall harder.
My body jolts from my bed. I scream as I clutch my chest.
"Hey! Hey hey hey! It's ok! I got you!" Aaron says as he grabs my hands from scratching myself. My rapid breathing slows down the more Aaron whispers reassurances in my ear. Lily walks in startled.
"Is she ok?!" She comes in with a washcloth. He nods and she breathes a sigh of relief. She walks out to grab a glass of water. She walks back in and hands it to me, along with a cool washcloth. I place the half-empty glass on the table and lay my head back down. My head is pounding once again.
"I'll leave you two alone. Get some rest, ok D? I'll check on you tomorrow. I love you." Lily says.
"I love you too." I say as she walks out. Aaron kisses my forehead and rests his head on my chest.
"I'll tell you what happened when my head decides not to kill me." I mumble as I play with his hair and touch my forehead. I rub my forehead and groan lightly.
"I should probably head out too. Don't wanna bother you." He says.
"I love you, Aaron." I say as he gets up to leave.
"I love you more D. Get some rest." He says as he walks toward the door. But I don't want him to leave. Right now I need him more than ever.
"Stay with me. Please?" I ask.
He looks back over at me with a small smile. He walks over and takes off his shoes. He lays in bed with me as he pulls me closer. I rest my head on his shoulder and drift off to sleep with his light breathing. I feel safe.
