Amelia Alard (Forty-three years old)

Zachariel's P.O.V

I had been quietly listening to everyone's conversation. I had decided not to meddle with the Marquis family's affairs. Chance had to ruin my mood by dragging me into the mess. I had a feeling that someone would question my integrity during lunch. I certainly didn't expect Chance, who already knew me, to doubt me. I was heartbroken about Alexei's past. I needed some time to cope with it. I didn't feel like answering Chance's ridiculous questions. Alexei grew up like an orphan despite having a family. I had it worse than him, but I was still feeling sorry for the man. Every child had the right to be happy, healthy, protected, and loved. Which sadly often didn't happen. I wished that I was there to hold Alexei and to tell him that everything would be alright. Alexei and I could wallow in misery together. I had been observing Mr. Marquis and Amelia since they had arrived. I could see that Alexandre Marquis was good at hiding his emotions.

Mr. Marquis was happy to see Alexei, but he was afraid to show it. I had caught Alexandre stroking his chest a few times during lunch. I had worked with many patients before. People who had undergone heart surgery tended to rub their wounds even if they had recovered. Amelia kept a watchful eye on her husband while he ate. I could see why Alexandre had fallen in love with Amelia. The woman was invariably courteous, soft-spoken, and beautiful. I had met Amelia many times before. She visited her mother every day at the psychiatric hospital. I was surprised that she still remembered me. It seemed like her husband didn't tell her about me because he wanted to protect her.

Everyone became quiet after listening to Alexandre's explanation. I was glad that Alexandre had told Alexei about his health. Many things were going through my mind at that moment. Thoughts like, "Why didn't Alexandre take Alexei along with him and hire a nanny to look after him?" were bothering me. I decided to lighten up the mood by duping Chance. Chance frowned at me when I answered his absurd question with, "His fortune, Chance. I can't wait to get my hands on it." Briac got amused by my answer. He even patted my back to commend me. Chance couldn't take a joke. He was fuming with anger. I didn't want to make matters worse, so I decided to be honest with him. I started to tremble with fear when I realized that I would have to share my past with the whole family.
