Walls of music

"Hey, did you hear about this?" Sungho practically yelled as he approached his friend running through the hallway. It wasn't that crowded but the people that were there stared at him, annoyed at how he always seemed to stand out. His friend however didn't hear him. She wore earbuds and were listening to music, cutting herself off from the world around her. Music was the way for her to channel her true self, the way melodies and harmonies could carry out such strong messages made her feel so at ease. She hummed along quietly while walking through the hallway on her way to her next class, Science. The most boring subject in her opinion. But the music helped her get through it. That and Sungho, her best friend.

"(Y/N)!" Yet again Sung-ho's loud voice echoed through the hallway, this time piercing the wall of music (y/n) had put up. She pulled on one of the strings, removing one earbud to be able to hear him better, but leaving the other one in to keep listening to the soft melodiy in the background. "What is it Sungho? What should I have heard about?" (y/n) turned her head to look at Sungho who just caught up with her but was terribly out of shape. He were breathing heavily as he tried to tell (y/n) the big news. "We... We're getting a new..." he began but this boy didn't work out for months and his condition clearly wasn't optimal. (y/n) chuckled at her poor friend and offered him some water. "Here, drink some."

Sungho smiled at her thankfully before taking a few big gulps out of the bottle. He let out a satisfied 'ahh' as he handed it back to his friend. "That's so much better (y/n), thanks. Oh! Have you heard? We're getting a new Chemistry teacher!" He grinned. Sungho hated the old teacher, Mister Choi, since he seemed to always have to pick on him. At least, he thought this was the case. Whether or not his inescapable prescence added to the case has never been confirmed nor denied by him. (y/n) was surprised on the other hand, why would mister Choi leave so suddenly? And how did the school find a replacement this quickly?

They both entered the classroom. Unlike the hallway, the classroom was crowded and loud and (y/n) put her earbud back in while her and Sungho made their way to their seats. On the way she looked around her. Everyone had their attention somewhere else, probably just talking about the grades they got in Maths or Biology, but not the popular girls. Seoyun and Jian sat in the back of the classroom, laughing as they looked at (y/n) going by and whispering to each other. She wanted to turn right back around and leave the room, a sudden wave of embarrassment coming over her as she didn't know what would make them laugh at her, but she felt a hand grab her wrist and pull her along. She was relieved to have a friend like Sungho. He always looked out for her and made sure she was okay. Granted, they knew each other since kindergarden so if anyone really knew (y/n) it was him, but where others just glanced at her whenever she sat alone at a table at lunchtime, Sungho came rushing over to her while tripping over his own feet and dropping his plate in the progress. As if he'd do anything to make her happy, make her laugh. She smiled at the thought of their friendship as she sat down next to him and pulled out her books.

"Attention, please!" the piercing voice of the head-mistress of their school had everyone silent and (y/n) quickly pulled out her earbuds. No way she'd be called out by her, she couldn't handle that right now. Or at any time really. "I have come to your class this morning because I have something important to tell you." The small but stern-looking miss Lee came out in front of the class. It's amazing how she could get the class silent within a second, given the energy level of this class. Miss Lee looked around the classroom for a moment before continuing. "As you may have heard, Mister Choi has resigned from teaching at our school. The reason for this is none of your business. Furthermore his sudden departure made us pick a new teacher for your Chemistry lessons." She glanced at the dooropening and continued. "Please welcome Kim Namjoon, your substitute teacher."

On cue, a man walked in. He, unlike the other teachers in their school, seemed to care about his physical appearance a lot. His dark blonde hair was parted on the left side but all the strands stayed together perfectly and his skin looked so flawless, he had to be wearing some makeup. He wore some light blue straight jeans and a white t-shirt with a turquoise cardigan on top, making his broad shoulders stand out very well. (y/n) examined her new teacher, he looked much like her age which was very unusual for a teacher on their school as well, most were end fifties looking old and grey. She giggled to herself at that thought. Mister Kim stood next to miss Lee and smiled at the class. "Hi there! My name is Kim Namjoon. Like miss Lee here said I'll be your substitute teacher for Chemistry. You guys are in luck because I love this subject, and I'll do my best to make you fall in love too!"

After miss Lee explained that mister Kim would only be teaching us temporarily and thanking them for listening she left the room, and their lesson began. Mister Kim had pulled off his cardigan before starting to write problems on the board and explaining how to solve them. Seoyun and Jian whispered to each other and Sungho caught some of what they were saying. He sighed. "He is sooooo handsome," he started mockingly, "Pfft, will girls ever think of something else than how attractive men are? There's more to us, you know?" Their teacher finished the theory and gave the students some exercises to make in silence. (y/n) grabbed one of the sheets off the stack and looked at the problems they were given. Even though school seemed to be relatively easy, these problems weren't. Normally, back with mister Choi, she was allowed to put in her music while working on exercises. But she didn't know if mister Kim was okay with that, and today wasn't a great day to try and find out. She had a lot on her mind and she couldn't use being told no by her new teacher in front of the whole class. So, she tried looking at Sungho's paper. He was okay in Chemistry, but her friend wasn't that good with these exercises either. He looked back at her and saw the panic in her eyes, smiled pityful at her and mouthed a "sorry" before turning back at the paper. (y/n) looked at the teacher's desk, but was surprised to find out he wasn't there anymore.

"Miss (y/n), are you alright?" she jumped in her seat when she heard mister Kim's voice and turned around to see him hunched over towards her. "I uhh... Well I mean I- I'm trying to answer the questions mister Kim I- it's just I-" she stumbled over her words. Damnit, she felt like a first grader who got caught doing something bad. She felt embarrassment take over and her cheeks turning red. "You can tell me (y/n), I'd like to help where I can to make sure you feel comfortable." He squats down next to her table and rests his head on the tabletop. (y/n) now had a chance to look at his face. Strong features, signs of not-so-well blended makeup trailed underneath his eyes. Oh wow, his eyes were a beautiful chocolate brown. She stopped her thoughts and frowned. What was she thinking? He was her teacher after all, even if she wanted to try something he wouldn't allow it. She let out a little sigh and grabbed her earbuds. "I'm sorry mister Kim, it's just that I... I have a lot on my mind today and these questions are quite hard to me. Before with mister Choi I was allowed to listen to music while dealing with harder problems but you said we needed to work in silence and I was scared to ask-" (y/n) was stopped by her teacher, who chuckled a little at her rambling. "It's okay (y/n), I understand. We all have our off days, right? You're allowed to use them as long as others won't hear your music." He stood up. "And don't hesitate to ask about it in the future, okay?" mister Kim smiled and winked at her before turning to check up on others.

(y/n) sighed quietly in relief and put her earbuds back in. Music had such an amazing effect on her. It made her able to concentrate and work hard. Cutting herself off from the world around her and the people with opinions about her. She didn't have to think about that at all. Just her and her music, and her exercises. Before she knew it, the bell rang to signal the end of their class. "Alright everyone, don't worry if you're not finished yet, just hand them in next time- oh, (y/n)! I thought you found these questions hard?" Mister Kim was surprised as (y/n) was the only one that turned in her paper. She smiled at him before walking out of the classroom. "Thanks for letting me use my earbuds sir, see you tomorrow!"

~~Hiya! I've decided to try out writing again. In my own pace I'm gonna write a new book and I'm gonna take you on that journey with me! Please let me know what you think about this chapter and what you'd like to see next! Love, Iris
