]|I{•------» CHAPTER FIFTEEN «------•}I|[
Callie could literally blame no one. She knew she had been too much, and it was rude and disrespectful of her to say those words. They didn't actually talk again until night. When Callie was called for dinner, she said she wasn't hungry, so Rietta came upstairs and handed her some macaroni and cheese.Scarlett tried talking to her, but all she got was silence from the room. She felt guilty, but she couldn't just let it pass because her beautiful daughter had to learn her lessons. The thing is, she shouldn't have slapped her, but it was a different situation. Callie had just yelled at her as if she were older than her mother, as if carrying and giving birth to her was that easy.
For Scarlett, it was better for Chris to talk to Callie. She knew how strong their bond was and, believe it or not, she felt kind of jealous over it. She would tell Chris what had happened and knew what his reaction would be.
As the sun took over the skies of Manhattan, Scarlett went downstairs and headed to the kitchen to prepare something special for her family, hoping it would lessen the feelings that Callie was experiencing.
After an hour, Callie finally decided to walk downstairs to get some water. She didn't expect to see her mama preparing food on the table. She wanted to turn back, but eventually gave it a go.
She just sat there, not saying anything. She didn't know how to start a conversation, and neither did Scarlett. After a few minutes of silence, the fourteen-year-old finally decided to break the tension between them by saying, "Uh, can I go somewhere now? I mean, Chris... he is planning on taking me to the museum here in New York. If you'll let me?"
Still, Rhislett didn't let her pride down.
An awkward and deafening silence grew even bigger until Scarlett spoke up. "He told you that? Why didn't he inform me?" she asked, her eyebrows furrowing as she placed the bacon on the table.
Honestly, Scarlett expected to hear the one word she'd been wanting to hear during that time, but Rhislett is as stubborn as she is. What would she expect?
Rhislett shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe he'll tell you later on. And I'm all dressed up now, can I go?"
Scarlett looked at Callie. "You should eat this first." She pointed to the food on the table.
"I'm not starving, and Chris promised me that he'll buy me food out there, so..."
"Maybe you should at least try it," Scarlett persuaded.
But Callie reasoned again, "I'm not hungry, maybe you should just let Rietta and Rosie eat this."
"But I prepared all of this for you," Scarlett admitted, her eyes pleading.
Is this your way of saying sorry to me? That'll never work.
Rhislett quickly stood up. "But I really have to go, and you can just eat this. And I thought you had work?"
Scarlett shook her head and looked down. "I, uh, took a week off, wanting to spend quality time with you guys. But perhaps it's not the best time."
Callie almost laughed, but she controlled it really well. Scarlett wanted to spend time with her? Why on earth would she say that?
