I woke up in a hospital bed. The white walls and sheets that surrounded me were in stark contrast to the black void that I could remember from the crash. It appears Driver’s Ed is utterly useless. They can teach you all the damn rules but they can never prepare you for the blundering fools that somehow pass a driving test.
I was lucky to be alive, the doctor told me when I woke up. My mom and dad and brother were there too. My mom was crying and her eyes were red and puffy, so I could tell it had been awhile. I had escaped with only minor injuries. I would make a full recovery.
A full physical recovery.
Nothing could ever prepare me for the nightmares that insisted on haunting my dreams. I would wake up to sounds of car horns and police sirens to learn that they were all in my head. I would fly through the night’s horrors and wake up in a pool of my own sweat. The night had become a time I dreaded.
I could never imagine how one small event could inflict so much pain, even after the wounds have healed. I never want to drive again.
