I got this idea from @incendio.art's wolfstar comic on Instagram—he posted it with and without the dialogue, and at first, I thought it was showing Remus waking up and realizing the previous slides were only a dream—so I wrote a fic about it!

Rollover Reaction: when your dream about someone you know skews how you feel about them all the next day, an emotion you are unable—and unwilling—to shake.

When Remus woke, there was someone playing with his hair.
"Shh, James, don't wake him yet!" Sirius's voice whispered.
James giggled, his voice lowering. "C'mon, Pete, hurry! Let me hold that."
"Just don't drop it!"
The hand left Remus's hair, and Remus slowly opened his eyes to see his three friends lined up next to his bed. James stood in the middle, holding a cake with a single lit candle on it.
"Huh?" Remus brushed the hair out of his face, blinking the sleep out of his eyes.
"Happy birthday!" They grinned widely as they stood in their pajamas.
"Aw, guys..." He smiled, his heart warming at the effort his friends had put into celebrating his birthday.
"Good morning, moonshine," Sirius added, stepping forward to sit on his boyfriend's bed. "I've got more presents for you later, but I'm taking you out today! Anywhere you want, Rem."
Remus closed his eyes and smiled as Sirius pressed a soft kiss to his lips.
"Happy birthday, handsome," Sirius whispered.
"I love you so much," Remus breathed, wrapping an arm around Sirius's neck to pull him down to the bed. Sirius mumbled an incoherent reply against his lips before pulling away, but when Remus opened his eyes, he was gone.
Remus blinked, frowning as the warmth in his chest ebbed away and the realization sunk in.
It was only a dream.
Sirius wasn't his boyfriend. Sirius didn't love him. And he'd certainly never find Remus handsome, of all things.
Remus shoved aside his bedspread and got out of bed, trudging to the bathroom.
"Happy birthday!" Sirius called excitedly when he saw that Remus was awake. When Remus only offered a weak smile in response, he frowned. "You okay?"
He nodded. "Yeah, bad dream's all."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Remus waved him off, wishing that this was the bad dream—that he could wake up any minute now and kiss Sirius again.
The dream left him feeling off-balance all morning. He couldn't stop thinking about how it felt to kiss Sirius, to have his fingers in his hair and to hear Sirius say he loved him—fuck.
It was getting increasingly harder to pay attention to his friends' conversations at breakfast, and it was getting increasingly harder to plaster on a smile and pretend that nothing was wrong.
