The call that changed everything

It was Friday afternoon when I first got the call, the one that sent my world crashing down.

I was in my apartment, not really doing much at all. I had just gotten out of the shower, hoping to relieve some of the stress of having to write a special paper for class about a subject I really could care less about.

I get into my jeans and a simple white t-shirt. I run a towel over my dark dripping hair, drying it.

As I walk into my living room my phone begins to ring. The loud iPhone ring tone blares through my silent apartment. I walk over to my dining room table and pick it up With furled eyebrows I stare at the screen that reads Mrs. Cane, the mother of my girlfriend Danielle.

Weird, she never calls me. The only time she had was when she wanted Danielle and I to join her for dinner.

I tap my thumb on the screen and answer the phone. “Hello?”

“James,” she says, her voice shaking. “We need you at the hospital right now.”

Worry fills my veins as I grip my phone tightly. “What happened?”

“D-Danielle…she got in a car accident. It was bad, James. Please come quick!” Her strained voice pleads.

I start to shake uncontrollably. This can’t be happening. “I’m on my way!”

I try not to allow myself to think of the worse as I head out. I run out of my apartment as fast as I can and hop into my car sitting at the nearby parking lot. As I start driving down the streets of Boston, on my way to the hospital, I start silently praying that Danielle will pull through any trauma she experienced.

But she said it was bad. So I’m guessing she won’t be coming out with just cuts and bruises. I am hoping that there aren’t any potentially fatal injuries. I wonder if she is conscious, if she’s in pain. Are all of her limbs in tact?

That thought sends shivers down my spine. Yet, I will stay by her side no matter what.  She means the world to me and I would do anything and everything for her. Even if she’s not the same.

We met in college along with our closest friends, Ron, Kaylen, Brandon and Riley. We have all been best friends since the first semester and are now starting our second year at the university .

Danielle and I began dating after months of endless flirting. I would’ve started dating her earlier, but I didn’t have the guts to ask her out. She was one of the most popular girls in school, and she was liked by everyone, especially by all the guys.

Sure she was pretty and everyone knew it, but she didn’t act like the typical ‘pretty’ girl in school. She loved everyone. She’s a funny, humble, encouraging and very open-minded person.
