Rough around the edges

"Mr. Rengoku is so dreamy, don't you think?" my friend held her chin in her palms, closing her eyes, "he's almost as young as us too! Do you think I have a chance?"

There she went again, spouting words upon words about crushes and fantasies. In fact, she does so much so that she is known as the pure embodiment of adolescence in Kimetsu Gakuen.

"You never know," I reluctantly replied, swinging my legs. Staring into the space of the ceiling as I do in every lesson. That was my duty as a student. As me. People often asked me what job I would take up in the future, ask me to take tests, talk to me for no reason. I wasn't going to lie and say that I feel like the main character of the world I live in. Close by, the school bells rang, echoing in my ears the beginning of a new day.

Tanjiro and Zenitsu were chosen to act out two sides of a war, and the rest of us were calvary and foot soldiers. The window tempted my eyes to an escape, to which I gave in to. Mr. Rengoku was renowned for his entertaining classes, but I never understood the fun in them.

"[Y/N]? [Y/N] hello!" the deafening voice shouted beside me. I was such a side character that there was a two people in the class with my same name. Forcing my face away from the outside world, I scanned the room for Mr. Rengoku. Several students sitting around me began to giggle and exchange hushed whispers whilst staring at something behind me, "[Y/N], up here!"

Not expecting a surprise, I leaned backwards in my chair and raised my head to face the ceiling that had garnered so many laughs. With his arms crossed, Rengoku stood put behind me. His flame coloured bangs brushed my face as he bowed over me. For a moment, we were in our own world, surrounded by veils of red and yellow. Realising my face was reddening, I sat upright in my seat, feeling the warmth of my cheeks with fumbling hands. What was I doing? Snap out of it, side character!

"[Y/N], we were going to choose a monarch to lead the country. Why don't you be the monarch?" he exclaimed with his obnoxiously thundering call. Never in the 15 years of being a side character had I heard such beautiful words.

"Me?" stunned, I was unbelieving of the fact someone had asked me to do something other than chores.

"Yes! You!" He said, as if he were an advertisement for joining the army. My insignificant heart tugged at my insides. 'Don't do it. You are a mere side character,' my brain complained.

"I'll do it," with grace, I rose from my seat. Rengoku grinned, arms at both sides.

"You're already in character! That's great!" the history teacher beamed before pretending to hold a sword within his hands, "I'll join in on the fun!" Everyone stood and armed themselves with books and pencils. With a chorus of cries, they charged at each other. As they jumped and lunged at each other, time seemed to stop. Colours flew in front of my eyes, the room spun into a grassy landscape. What was this? A white cape cascaded from Rengoku's shoulders, ending in red and yellow flames patterns. Not only Rengoku, everyone else seemed to be wearing a uniform. Tanjiro and Zenitsu too, a black and green haori and a yellow haori with triangles. Swords clashed around me, dying cries sounded. It was such an alien environment... yet...

Tears welled in my eyes. Confusedly, I wiped them with my palms before bursting out in sobs. The scene brought me to my knees. Deep within me, I sensed a nostalgia. There was a reason this was all familiar to me which I couldn't grasp.

"[Y/N]!" My teacher shouted... no... the flame pillar shouted, "I'll protect you, so don't cry. Pull yourself together!"

Even from so far away, his radiating warmth reached my core, but... I could also tell that if I climbed too close, I would get scorched. He was unreachable. Rubbing my eyes, I attempted to pull myself together.

"[Y/N]... are you okay? Did someone hurt you?" my friend patted my back. Huh? Where was I?...

The whole classroom was gathered, all gazing at me with pitying looks. The flame pillar, no, my teacher began to laugh. Soon enough, the whole class was laughing and rolling around playfully. What was going on?

"You saw didn't you?" Rengoku kneeled on the floor beside me.

"Saw?..." I wondered, searching his passionate face. Saw? That vision?

"Don't cry any more, [Y/N]" His hand moved to my cheek, dispelling the droplets with a gentle movement of his finger, "your performance as the monarch was amazing! You even drew out real tears, amazing! Amazing!"

Still sniffling, my hands found his, "Thank you, Rengoku. Thank you... flame pillar."
