“The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them”
― Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island

He told
me that
only I
can define
myself.

I was
the girl.

I am
a woman.

I am
black in
many ways.

But I
am also
chocolate, gold,
obsidian.

I am
everything and
nothing all
at once.

I am
girly, boyish,
punk, trashy,
classy.

I am
smart, kind,
shy, talented.

I am
everything.

But I
am also
a tiny
part in
this world.
Practically nothing.
So, it's
very hard
to understand
who and
what I
am. I
guess that
I am
a whole
new category
of myself.

No one
can define
who you
are, but
yourself. My
skin doesn't
tell my
story. I
tell my
story. But
I love
myself as
I am.
Because I am a category called

ME.
