"Please do repeat that one more time." Dorothea frowned as she eyed Bella's sprained hand, which Carlisle was carefully examining for any further damage. Her sharp gaze made Bella shift uncomfortably, but before she could respond, Jasper and Emmett walked into the room, sparing her from Dorothea's scrutiny.
Bella let out a quiet sigh of relief.
"Tried to walk and chew gum again, Bella?" Emmett chuckled, crossing his arms as he leaned against the doorframe. His teasing was met with an unimpressed look from Bella, but he continued laughing.
Jasper, as always, moved straight to Dorothea's side, pressing a soft kiss to her temple before turning his focus to the human in question.
Dorothea might have found Emmett's joke amusing—given Bella's history with clumsiness—but her mind was elsewhere. Worry flickered beneath her cool demeanor, though not for Bella. Her thoughts went to Jacob, and she pitied whatever situation had led to this.
"I punched a werewolf in the face," Bella admitted nonchalantly.
Emmet raised an eyebrow before smirking. "Badass."
Jasper let out an amused hum, his grip tightening on Dorothea as she leaned into him, pouting slightly. "You'll be a tough little newborn."
"Tough enough to take you."
"Okay, that's enough, guys," Dorothea cut in, waving a hand dismissively. But the damage was done—Rosalie had heard everything. Without a word, she turned on her heel and stomped away, fury evident in the rigidness of her shoulders.
The topic of Bella's transformation wasn't one that sat well with anyone, least of all Rosalie. Dorothea herself still struggled with the idea, and Rosalie's bitterness was justified—during the vote, no one had truly taken her side, except for Dorothea.
Jasper and Dorothea exchanged glances before turning to Emmett, both raising their eyebrows expectantly. With a heavy sigh, Emmett pushed off the doorframe and rushed after his wife.
But it wasn't Emmett who reached Rosalie first. Bella did. Dorothea immediately understood what was about to happen—Rosalie was going to spill her past.
Before anyone could process it further, Edward entered the room, his expression serious as he looked at Jasper. "Got any leads?" Jasper shook his head. "No sign of intruders. But Victoria still tends to make appearances."
