Pulling into your driveway from school, you see a big moving truck parked next door. You sat in your car, eager and meticulously waiting for people to come out to the truck. Your mother comes out to catch you observing the neighbors.
"Are you spying on the newcomers?" She questions.
"Of course not, I was just giving a quick look," you lied.
She shook her head and turned to go back inside. You reach over to the passenger seat to grab your backpack. Scurrying inside, you go to your room to start homework.
2 hours later
As you finished up homework you smelled a faint chocolate aroma coming from the kitchen. Walking in to see your mom placing cookies in a Tupperware.
"Mom? What are you doing?" You ask.
"Oh, good timing. These are for the new neighbors," she smiles.
"Are they coming over or something?" Tilting your head to the side with a confused expression.
"That's where you come in. You're gonna introduce yourself to them. I heard there's a boy your age over there," she added.
Your heart drops as she shoves the cookies in your hands. Pushing you out the door you noticed that the moving truck was gone. They must've finished moving everything in. Slowly trudging down the sidewalk, your throat gets dry.
What if they think I'm weird? I'm just overthinking it, right? Hopefully he's nice.
Lost in your thoughts, you didn't realize that you reached the doorstep. You hesitate before ringing the doorbell.
"Who's at the door?"
"I don't know, I'll check."
The lock swiftly turns and the door is pushed open. A tall black-haired boy stood at the doorway.
"Oh, uh hello," he utters.
"Hey, I'm your next-door neighbor. My mom wanted me to give this to you and your family," you hold out the Tupperware towards him.
"Thank you. That's very kind of you guys," he gives a sheepish grin as he takes the container from you.
"I'm y/n l/n by the way," you hold your hand out.
"Bertholdt Hoover," he takes your hand and gives a light shake.
"Bertholdt? Who's at the door?"
He looks over his shoulder to see his dad walking in his direction.
"Oh, this is y/n. She's our next-door neighbor," he turns to the side and points in your direction.
His father reaches the door, staring at you, he gives a look of approval. Switching his gaze to the sweets you delivered he raises an eyebrow.
"Bert you're already attracting girls," he jokes
Bertholdt's face turns red as he glances at you.
"She said her mother made these for us," he mumbled.
"I'll take these for you," his dad reaches over to receive the container. "You can continue talking to your new friend," he assured.
You watched him walk away to give personal space. Bertholdt turns his attention to you as he fumbles with his hands.
"Are you attending y/hs?" You ask.
"Yeah, I start tomorrow. Maybe you could show me around?" He replies.
"Of course," you accept.
"Ok great. I'll give you a ride as payment for the cookies," he added.
"You don't have to do that," you say.
"Come on, you don't want to ride with your new neighbor?" He mocks a distraught tone.
You give in, "Fine, I'll accept your ride. I'll be here by 8:30."
He nods his head, "see you then."
"Ok see you later," you wave and turn to go back home.
Entering your house, you head to the bathroom to do your nightly routine. Finishing up, you change into comfortable clothes and go to bed.
8:20 am
Your alarm didn't ring, which caused you to wake up late. You rush around your room and quickly throw on an outfit. Peeking through your window you see Bertholdt leaning against his car patiently waiting for you.
"Y/n! Hurry up you're going to be late for school," your mom yells.
Running out of your room with your bag you rush out the door. Bert looks up from his phone and smiles when he sees you.
"Hey," he greets.
"Hi," you mutter.
He turns to the passenger door to open it for you. Taking a seat in his car he waits until you're fully buckled in to close the door. You watch him walk around to the driver's side. He hops in and starts the car.
"Did you eat?" He asks.
"No, I woke up late so I didn't get the chance to," you reply.
He opens his backpack and hands you a muffin.
"Here, I grabbed this just in case you were hungry or something," he smiles.
"Thank you," you smile back.
He turns to the wheel and puts the car in reverse. Backing out of the driveway you both head to school to start his first day.
A/n: to my avid readers on my second book, I'm still continuing that one. I just wanted to write this Bert fic bc it never left my mind 😔
