I strapped the vortex manipulator on my wrist and covered it with my sleeve so he couldn't see.
We'd traveled together for so long, and he'd told me so much about her, his lost love, that I had to try. He was my best friend.

He dropped me off at my apartment in New York. I'd told him I was just going to get some things and say hello to my parents.
Of course, he knew about the tumor, he'd scanned me long ago. He probably also knew that I didn't have much longer, but we didn't talk about that.
"I'll be back in a minute." I said. "I'm just going to say hello."
He nodded, his eyes sad. His eyes were always so sad.
I ran inside and explained to my parents my situation, and what I was about to do. They understood. I hugged them both goodbye and left.
I stood outside the TARDIS. I held back tears as I thought of all the adventures I'd had with my best friend.
"Jen?" the Doctor said, peeking his head out the door now. "What are you doing? Come inside."
I shook my head, tears flowing freely now. I pulled back my sleeve, revealing my vortex manipulator.
Realization dawned in his face.
"Jen, what are you doing with that?"
"Doctor, I have to try, for you. You're my best friend, I have to try and save her for you. So long Doctor."
I slammed my hand on the vortex manipulator, the coordinates had been set when I was inside.
I heard him scream "no!" and saw him lunge towards me as I vanished.
I reappeared inside Torchwood. Right beside the Doctor. Rose was beside him. They were about to send the daleks and cybermen flying into the void.
"Who're you?" the Doctor asked, a puzzled look on his face.
"That's not important. I'm here to help."
He stood there staring at me for what seemed like hours.
"Now come on! We've got work to do!" I shouted.
He burst into action.
We clung to the magnetic clamps.
The lever started to fall.
Rose reached for it.
"No!" I shouted, extending my grasp to reach for the lever. "I'll get it!"
Rose recoiled and I let go of the clamp and latched onto the lever, pulling it back into place. I felt my feet leave the ground.
"Doctor!" I screamed. I gave him the exact date and place that I first met him. I remembered it fondly."Tell me what I need to do when I find out I've not got much time left."
He nodded, probably confused as to why I was telling him this.
"So long Doctor."
I felt the lever being wrenched from my grasp and I fell into the void.

Rose and the Doctor walked hand in hand back into the TARDIS. The threat was gone, and although she would never see her mother again, she was with her love.
The Doctor put in the coordinates for the date and place the woman had told him. He didn't know her name or why he trusted her, but she saved their lives by fixing that lever.
When they landed, he walked out and leaned on the doors and waited. Rose had gone to her room to rest.
He saw the woman. She was walking down the street. She seemed to be daydreaming.
She passed an alley and something from within grabbed her. The Doctor ran to the alley. A slitheen had her by the throat and seemed to be attempting to use her body for a suit.
The Doctor raced into the restaurant kitchen next door and ignored several strange looks as he grabbed a bottle of vinegar and raced out again. He threw the vinegar at the alien and it burst, sending green goo everywhere.
He sauntered up to the woman, grinning.
"Hello. I'm the Doctor."
"Jen." She replied, wiping green slime off of her jacket.
She looked up at him questioningly. "Wait a second, Doctor who?"
