There was one more thing she needed and wanted to do.
A week later
"Hey." Meredith started slowly, looking down at Andrew's gravestone in front of her. She had finally brought up the courage inside her to visit him. But even though she had taken the time she needed, it didn't make it any easier.
She already felt some tears forming in her eyes, threatening to fall out. She quickly looked up at the sky to prevent them from doing so, letting the sun dry them before they could fall down. She gave herself a moment before she swallowed the knot that has been forming in her throat at all the memories that invaded her now and knowing that he was just... gone.
She looked at the flowers she had brought with her in her hands and then at his grave again. This time with a small smile. Andrew had always been the one who had shown her with all these small gifts and gestures how much she meant to him. Breakfast in the morning, or a cup of coffee between their shifts, candles at the dinner table, ice cream in bed or her favorite flowers. And somehow, he had managed to make her love all these small moments they had shared together. She carefully leaned down to lay the flowers on his grave, next to his gravestone.
"I didn't come sooner, because... I was scared." She started hesitantly. "I didn't want to have to let you go." She added after a moment, taking a deep breath, trying to keep herself together.
She looked at his grave a few more moments before she looked up at the sky, feeling the small smile on her face again, while a single tear rolled down her cheek "But I wanted to let you go in peace, because I know you would still be here if you could."
She paused for another moment and then added "And I know you wouldn't regret what you did. And you shouldn't. You saved so many people."
He had always cared so much. About his patients, about his coworkers, his family, about everyone who was around him. He wanted to help. He wanted to make a difference. And he did. Until his last breath. He saved so many children by getting that woman arrested. He didn't look away; he cared and tried his best to help. "I always loved how deeply you cared about the people around you."
"I just wish we would have gotten another chance. You were the one who made me want to open up again, you were the one who made me want to love again. And I will try to keep that inside me, not to completely close myself off again. I will try to be happy. I know you would want that for me."
[You were perfect for me the way you are. And all I wish for is for you to allow yourself to be happy.]
"Even though you aren't here anymore, you'll always be a part of my life. You'll always have a special place in my heart." She looked up at the sky again, letting the sun shine on her face, feeling the warmth from the sunrays filling her body, just like Andrew had always been able to make her feel his warmth and love. He would always be with her in some way. She knew that.
[You were the most special person I met during my life.]
"Thank you for everything you did for me. Thank you for letting me feel that love again."
"I will always love you."
[Ti amo, Mer.]
"Ti amo, Andrea."
