luke's shoes scuffed against the concrete as he walked home from work in the fading sunlight, his head down and eyes focused on the ground. it wasn't that dark outside yet, only being around 7:30 at night.

he came across the same alleyway he passed everyday, quirking his eyebrow. there was usually some noise coming from down the alley, but today it was close to silent. he knew he should have just kept walking, but luke was curious to see why it was so quiet down there. he was a big boy, he could take care of himself if there was anything threatening going on.

luke peeked his head into the entrance of the alley, not seeing anything suspicious. his eyes caught something towards the back of the alley, and from what he could tell it was someone shivering.

he carefully walked down the alleyway, knowing that he was potentially putting himself in danger but he didn't care. he crouched down and became eye level with a boy around his age, alseep and curled up against a cardboard box.

luke's heart broke at the poor boy in front of him, he looked absolutely freezing, even if it wasn't really cold outside. though he had a beanie on top of his -what looked like blue- hair, his tattered sweatpants and ratty shirt were enough to make him shiver.

he couldn't not help him now. if luke just walked away and went home, he would never forgive himself for letting someone stay outside like that.

"hey," he whispered, gently shaking the boys shoulder, as not to startle him.

the boy winced, opening his eyes and oh god, were they pretty. "d-don't hurt, p-please," he said in a small voice, hugging himself tightly, looking terrified of luke.

luke frowned, placing his hand on his shoulder again, making the smaller of the two whimper. "no, no i'm not going to hurt you," he said softly, removing his hand and dropping it by his side. "what's your name?"

the boy looked up at him, eyes wide and scared. "m-mikey," he stuttered, his eyes now flickering behind luke, as if he wanted to make a run for it.

luke noticed and subtly moved over so he couldn't get past. he didn't question why mikey was outside all alone, nor did he care, he just wanted to help him, even if he didnt know him. luke had always had a big heart for people living on the streets, and this was no exception.

"why don't you come home with me and get you cleaned up, yeah? i'll get you some warm blankets and you can stay with me for a little bit," he offered gently, giving mikey a small smile. he knew it was a long shot, but the least he could do was try, right?

"n-no, is fine here," mikey said quickly, then winced away from luke like he was going to get hit for raising his voice above a whisper. luke furrowed his eyebrows at his actions, and the way his speech was a little broken.

"just one night, okay? at least let me get you something to eat," luke pleaded, noticing for the first time how skinny the pale boy was.

it took a lot of coaxing, but luke had finally gotten him to agree to staying at his house, at least until he could find a home of his own. he watched the smaller boy look around anxiously, as if something was going to pop out at any moment and hurt him.

when they walked up to luke's little apartment, mikey stood behind the tall blonde as he unlocked the door. he held open the door and let mikey walk inside before him, shutting and locking the door again.
