Louis scribbled down a few notes on his pre-op patients when his best friend and co-worker Zayn arrived in his scrubs in lab coat.

“Good morning Louis,” he greeted, sipping his coffee. He searches for the clipboards with his patients for the day.

“Morning Zayn,” Louis says, picking out his clipboards as well.

“Are you ready for the new interns?” Zayn asked, already knowing the answer. Being an intern was like freshman year in high school; nobody likes you. There’s no real reason, other than being new and having the lack of knowledge to succeed in the field, they are just disliked.

“Oh yes,” Louis says with sarcasm dripping off his lips. “Isn’t it great that the chief picked us to referee the new interns?”

Zayn pats his friend’s cheek while shaking his head. “One day Louis that sarcasm will get you in trouble.”

Louis shrugs his shoulders. “It hasn’t yet.”

Zayn gathered his clipboards and takes one last sip of his coffee before tossing it in a waste basket. “Ready to go ‘referee’?” He asks in a cheery, but sarcastic, voice.

Louis chuckles at his friend’s humor and gathers his clipboards. “Sure,” Louis says unenthusiastically.

Zayn and Louis board an elevator and take it up to floor 3 where the interns have their lockers. On floor 2, their best friend and head paramedic Niall jumps on. The boys greet each other with handshakes and hugs. “Interns today, right?” Niall asks, pressing button 1.

“Ugh, yes,” Louis groans.

“Hey now, remember we were once interns,” Niall points out, adjusting the cuffs on his uniform shirt. He, too, was an intern over in Mullingar. He was ranked 3rd in his class, even though he was a big party goer, and got accepted into medical school. He moved to Doncaster after getting offered an actual job. The boys met over at Manny’s Bar for drinks a year ago. They’ve been friends ever since.

“Yeah, but that’s in the past. Now we have to deal with different versions of ourselves.” Louis explains.

“That made no sense, but, at the same time, made perfect sense,” Zayn commented. Niall agreed.

The boys agreed to meet at Manny’s after their shift when the elevator stopped on floor 3 and Louis and Zayn stepped off. Niall wished them good luck before the elevator doors closed.

Louis and Zayn rounded a few corners before entering the intern locker room. Zayn banged on the door, getting everyone’s attention. “Good morning interns. My name is Zayn Malik, call me Dr. Malik only, and I am a general surgeon,” Zayn shouted.

Louis grinned some at Zayn’s commanding attitude. He knows that Zayn is anything but commanding when it comes to anything outside the hospital.

“My name is Louis Tomlinson, call me Dr. Tomlinson, and no, Dr. T does not suffice and I am a cardio surgeon. If the field of cardio interests you, I suggest not ticking me off,” Louis spoke up.

Zayn smiles to himself. He remembers when an elderly patient called Louis Dr. T and that drove him nuts. Made the patient happy, but ticked Louis off. He didn’t show it, of course.

“Five of you will come with me, while the others will go with Dr. Malik,” Louis added. “When I call your name, I will hand you your id cards. Carpender, Welson, Bennett, Lynn, Styles,” Louis read off his sticky note.

A blonde with the name ‘Carpender’ stitched into her scrubs approaches me first. Her scrubs show off a good amount of cleavage. “Thank Dr. Tomlinson,” she winked, continuing into the hallway. Louis rolled his eyes. ‘If she thinks she’s getting any, she is sadly mistaken.’

A brunette approached Louis next. She took her card labeled Welson with only a nod. ‘Shy,’ Louis observed. ‘Could be either a drop out or surprise.’

Bennett and Lynn both walked up to Louis. Louis’s first initial thought was ‘nerds.’ Both had untamable, sandy blonde hair. Bennett is a tall boy with scattered pimples on his face. He took his id card with a silent, “thank you.” Lynn is a rather short and plump boy with thin glasses. He took his id card and shook Louis’s hand. Both boys followed the others into the hallway.

Louis searched around the room. “Styles?” He called out.

“Sorry sir, coming,” a voice called out from behind a row of lockers.

Louis felt his world slow down as a tall boy with long, curly hair and sparkling green eyes emerged from behind the lockers. It was like in the old movies where the film is slowed and the character being observed has sparkles floating around their head and a love song from the 50’s plays loudly.

Harry Styles felt extremely embarrassed to be the last to be ready. He had problems finding a parking spot, couldn’t open his locker, and had to pull apart his entire bag for his pen light. When he came around the lockers, he saw a face of true beauty. He wore light green scrubs and a white lab coat. He has short, brown, feathery hair and piercing blue eyes. His chin has a bit of stubble, indicating he hadn’t shaved in a while.

When their eyes met, it was like they shared the same feelings. It was strange, knowing both boys had never looked at another boy this way before.

Harry was going to explain his tardiness when Louis cut him off. “No need for excuses, just get in the hallway,” he ordered. “And I will not tolerate tardiness again.”

Harry hung his head in shame and dashed into the hallway, taking his id card on his way. Louis followed him, giving Zayn a thumbs up before leading his interns to his first patient.
