Kara~

I lugged the last of the boxes up the stairs. I quickly brought my wrist up to my forehead to wipe the beads of sweat that had formed before digging the key from out from the front left pocket of my jeans. The key, dingy and rusted as it may be, meant the world to me. It's what I had spent eight years working at minimum wage for. I plugged it into the doorknob and twisted it until I heard the clicking of an opened door. I pushed the door wide and begin to drag the boxes over the threshold.

After unpacking only the essentials, I flopped onto the couch that came with the apartment. Thoughts of dread crept into mind. Now that Emma was no long moving in with me, I was going to have to search for a new roommate. With the price of the rent, I'd have to find one soon or else I'd end up getting thrown out of the building by the end of the month. Homelessness was not an option. I would show everyone who ever doubted me that I am a fighter. I grabbed a blank sheet of paper and jotted my number and the fact that I was looking for a roommate.

Quickly, I ran to the copy store to make a few copies of the paper. It seemed like a fair establishment, the only strange part though, was when the check-out cashier kept asking about where I was from. I tried my best to politely dismiss the questions but I was left with a slight nagging feeling.

After hanging a few signs on the way back to the apartment, I arrived back to my new home. Looking at the clock, I realized how late it was. I grabbed a glass from the cupboards and filled it with tap water. Downing the drink, I made my way to my bedroom and quickly switched into nightwear consisting of a thin tank top and cotton night shorts. Placing the glass on my nightstand, I opened my bedside window, shut off the lights, and slipped under the light bedsheets. Shutting my eyes, I slipped into a blissful sleep listening to the crickets chirping.
