My day started like any other. The morning sun smothered me in its comforting kisses as I woke from my slumber, and I felt the familiar struggle of waking up -- it was at it's peak. It was also the first day of summer. And, coincidentally, it was the first sunny morning I'd felt since last summer. Even spring held some sort of gloomy presence, despite the bees and "family" barebques.
I hate family barbeques.
I hate being social.
I'm one of those girls who sit in the back at class and only speak when I'm asked to. You know, glasses, shoulder lengthed hair, loves to read. Hates to speak. I'm off the grid, but it doesn't really bother me. I mean, sure, I'd love to be that tanned blonde who could be a Victoria's Secret model and is so rich she could probably buy me, and yeah, I'd love to be that brunette who's blessed with perfect skin, is good at every sport and has boys on their knees for her.
But I'm not.
I'm that ginger who has three friends and lives off books and energy drinks, with the body of a 9 year old boy.
I'm Ember.

I reached for my glasses, knocking over a glass of water in the process. Pushing my glasses further up my nose, I checked my phone.
"9 missed calls from Violet."
"4 missed calls from Millie."
Shit.

I tried Violet. No reply. Again, no reply. Until finally...
"I have so much to tell you!" she exclaimed through the phone.
"Vi, it's 8'clock in the morning. How much could've happened since yesterday?"
I heard a small grunt.
"Just listen to me! You're going to love this."
I doubted I would, but I forced my most enthusiastic "Tell me!"
"Millie finally did it."
Silence.
Fear.
"Arent you going to say anything?"
More silence.
I gulped.
"Did what, Vi?"
I could feel her excitement just by holding my phone.
"She got the audition!"
Thank fuck.
I let out the breath I'd been unaware of holding, but must of been too quiet to hear through the phone because Violet repeated her answer.
"That's great! I'm happy for her. But why should I love this oh so much?" I asked through a smile.
"Because one of the lead roles in the play is Lily Ferguson! And I just know how you feel about her, so Millie getting the audition gives you an excuse to talk to her!"
I had told Violet I liked Lily Ferguson to cover up the fact that I liked someone completely different. Can you guess who?
"Oh, that's great! You really are always on the lookout for a potential girlfriend of mine, arent you, Vi?" I said glumly, yet playfully.
"You're just going to have to deal with it. Theres no stopping me now, you know I've been like this since you came out..."
I trailed off, and my mind went straight to Millie. I thought about the smile she'd have plastered to her face when I congratulate her. Or the flicker of love in her kind, blue eyes when she saw me. Or her lips against mine...
But she's not mine.
I guess it's pretty obvious who I like now, right?
