*Dean POV*

There was something extremely strange and very alarming about standing over your own body. Dean couldn't quite understand exactly what was going on, but he didn't like it. Doctors and nurses filtered in and out of room, shoving tubes down his throat and attaching various wires to his arms and chest. Dean called out to them, to anyone, but it was like he wasn't even there. Dean groaned in frustration and decided to go and find Sam. He walked out the room but the corridors were deserted. Dean furrowed his brows in confusion, how could the hospital be empty? He'd just seen a team of medical staff leave his room. He continued down the halls, calling out for Sam, John and Riley.

He reached the reception desk and saw a woman sat behind it. He walked over to it and tried to get her attention, but once again the woman acted as though he wasn't even there. Dean rolled his eyes and muttered something about the woman being useless and went back to his room. He jumped slightly as he walked in, spotting himself lying on the bed. He shook his head and stood over himself, staring down. He heard voices in the hall behind him and spun around to see Sam wheel Riley into the room.

"Well it's about time!" Dean exclaimed.

But Sam and Riley didn't look at him. Dean was about to yell again but he froze when he saw Sam leave and Riley grip his hand. Dean stood behind her and listened as Riley started speaking to him. Dean wanted to grab her and shake her silly when she'd admitted she shouldn't have returned to them, then maybe Dean wouldn't have been hurt. Instead, he stood beside her and ran a hand down her cheek. Riley froze then and Dean called her name again. She'd felt him, he was sure of it. Dean held his breath as Riley looked around the room. When she shook her head and looked back at him, lying in the bed, Dean released another frustrated groan. But then Riley started speaking again.

"I know you hate the whole big speech before dying thing, but tough, you can't fight me on this one." Riley said with a watery chuckle.

"Oh Riley, don't you dare." Dean groaned.

"When I first met you, I hated you." Riley admitted.

"Wow, don't hold back." Dean rolled his eyes.

"But somehow, despite all the fights, you changed my mind." Riley said softly.

Dean looked up sharply. "I did?" He wasn't even sure why he was asking, because Riley couldn't even hear him. Riley kissed his hand again and Dean unconsciously touched his own hand.

"You broke down my walls and you dug your way straight into my heart." Riley said through her tears.

Dean lowered his head. Riley started to thank him and Dean shook his head. He didn't want her thanks, he didn't want some deep confession, he didn't want her to talk to his unconscious body. Because that meant that Riley believed he was going to die. He ran the back of his fingers down her cheek again.

"I know you think that being a hunter means you can't fall for someone." Riley sniffled.

Dean ran a hand through his hair and wished more than anything that he could stop Riley.

"If that's the case I must be the worlds worst hunter. Because I fell for you, Dean. I broke rule number one." Riley smiled through her tears.

Dean closed his eyes and released a sigh. "Why Riley, why do this to me?"

Riley broke down and Dean felt a tear slide down his cheek. Riley begged him to come back, claiming she needed him and Dean felt his heart break.

"I'm trying, Princess." Dean whispered.

Riley stood up, wincing and holding onto her ribs. Dean tried to tell her to sit down again, but then remembered it was pointless, she couldn't hear him. She dropped down on the bed beside his sleeping body and placed her hand on his face. Dean touched his cheek as he watched her, as if could feel everything his body was feeling. Then she kissed his forehead and Dean released another tear. He felt it. He felt it all. But the thing that made his heart stop wasn't the kiss or the feel of her hand on his face. It wasn't even the warm breath he felt on his ear and down his neck. It was the four words Riley whispered to his unconscious self.
