Humans. Humans are strange beings. Humans have feelings. Humans feel love. Humans feel hate. Through emotions they demand, through emotions they allow themselves to be manipulated. Through manipulation conflicts arise, through conflict wars arise. Humans fight Humans.
Father had given him a special mission. Him. Envy. He was particularly proud of that. The mission was going to change the history of Amestris, possibly even start an entire war. The homunculus proudly stretched his chest as he patrolled the streets of a town in Ishval. He had taken on the appearance of a highly respected military man so that no one would suspect anything. Envy had even been able to learn that this man was a special peacekeeper. How ironic, he thought to himself as his eyes roamed the area looking for a victim. A child would be best, Father had said. People react especially emotionally around children.Ridiculous, these emotions of people. Don't they realise how weak it makes them?He watched as a young couple walked past him, obviously deeply in love and raving about their future.I will never understand them.Wrinkling his nose as if disgusted, he let go of the couple and continued to strut through the streets. He mutely endured the disparaging looks he received from some of the town's inhabitants thanks to his blue uniform. Some even made mean jokes about him to express the resentment they felt towards the military. But Envy only smiled maliciously. Just you wait, you worms. Your laughter will soon be gone.Laughing quietly at the thought, he wandered on in the heat of the beating sun and arrived at the town square. Today was even market day and many people bustled about here, examining the stalls of the vendors. Enough families came here.Enough witnesses.Envy stood by the small staircase and looked down on the people from an elevated position.I'm even literally standing clearly above them now, he thought to himself with a grin, then laughed softly to himself again.A child stopped in front of him and looked at him in confusion as he stood there laughing all alone. It was a girl with short white hair, red eyes and dark skin. Typical Ishvalian. She wore a light-coloured dress, slightly dirty from playing, and in one hand she held her stuffed animal, which seemed a little too big for her small body. The child was no older than 5, Envy guessed, and eyed her critically. Nearby, he heard the parents calling for her, but the girl did not turn away and smiled at the man in uniform. She wasn't afraid of him, why should she be? Just a few days ago this very man helped her scare away those stupid boys who had it in for her teddy. Envy smiled back.Within seconds, the homunculus had made a decision. This is her.His chosen one. She would change history with his help. Regrettably, she would not live to see any of it. So it was that before the girl knew it, a gun was held to her face. Her smile turned to confusion and the soldier's first friendly smile began to change. An eerie shadow settled over the soldier's face. The girl's parents saw what was happening from a distance and called out in panic for their daughter. Before the desperate cries reached the child, a shot rang out and echoed across the square. That shot, that single bullet and that little innocent child changed history.

FanfictionNot Spoiler free! I know that Envy is not assigned a gender. For simplicity's sake, I used male pronouns because he was titled male in the FMAB anime. Maybe I'll change it!
