Everyone in the world is born only seeing the world in shades of grey. The rumor goes that when you touch your soulmate, you get to see color.

Rantaro liked hearing his classmates tell the legend. It reminded him of the stories he read to his sisters. The stories filled with beautiful royalty and brave warriors. He wondered what story they would want to hear next.

Meanwhile, kokichi scowled. As a self-proclaimed 'expert liar' he could tell a truth from a lie. And the whole soulmate thing sounded like bs. " sounds like something Kaito would believe." He snickered to himself.

The bell rang and class started. Most of the students just tuned out to the teacher, thinking about more important things. Like what'd they do after school or what homework they had. The time seemed to tic be slowly ever once in a while someone would glance at the clock. This was until the teacher said the dreaded words " you will all be doing a group project. I will be choosing the groups"

A few sighs, groans, and whispers of 'what!' And 'huh' filled the classroom. "Quit your whining!" The teacher scolded, "You will be in a predetermined group of 2. Then I will give each group a list of historical topics to choose from..." the teacher trailed off a few people stopped paying attention, relying on their unknown groupmate to listen and explain.

Both Rantaro and Kokichi were some of those people, they both had more things to worry about. And the teacher would probably just give a paper that explains the project anyways. "The members of the group will come and get a paper with the instructions, rubric, and topic choices. Now, I will call the groups starting with..." the teacher squinted " Rantaro and Kokichi" there were a few giggles and sighs of relief, thank god I wasn't paired with Kokichi.

Rantaro went up to the teacher " Kokichi please come up to the front to get your supplies" the teacher said her patience clearly already running thin "fine hag!" The boy said.

There were a few laughs, not because people thought what he said was funny but more of a did he seriously just say that kind of way. A chair scratched the floor and he hopped down the aisle with a mischievous grin ignoring the burning glare of the teacher. " here are your papers. Kokichi stay on your best behavior" she sounded annoyed "thank you mis-" Rantaro reached out to grab the papers but Kokichi grabbed them before he could. Kokichi to the back of the room. Rantaro let out a sigh and followed him.

Class was almost over, the most the pair got done was choosing a topic and making an outline of what the project would look like. " this project is due in a week, the poster should take a day or two to make, but it shouldn't take that long to research." Rantaro said, Kokichi rolled his eye clearly bored out of his mind. "Ranran you're so boring. We could just wait until the weekend but noooOooo we have to make this now" he whined, Rantaro let out a soft scoff he needed the patience to deal with Kokichi.

" well if we do it now we don't have to worry about it until its due date, so how about after school we can go somewhere to finish up getting the information and we can spend the rest of the time making the poster"  Kokichi pouted "but where would we even go." There was no way Kokichi was going to let this rando into his home, the same went for Rantaro.

"We can just go to a cafe or something. Seems like a safe bet and it would definitely be calmer" Kokichi begrudgingly nodded.

At the cafe, they actually did get a fair amount of work done. Not as much as Rantaro is used to getting done but he could settle. A lot of the time was put to them talking to each other. Kokichi was difficult to understand, but Rantaro could figure out what was true and what was a lie with only a little brainpower.

Until the end, Rantaro went to grab one of the papers the teacher had given them at the same time Kokichi reached to grab it for him. Their fingers brushed each other and then a bright flash of light Rantaro quickly shut his eyes while Kokichi coved his with his hand.

After a second or two Kokichi moved one of his hand and with squinted eyes and a pounding headache saw color for the first time. " no, nononono THIS IS NOT HAPPENING. Soulmates don't exist! Color is just a myth. NONE OF THIS IS REAL" was all that he could think of. His whole worldview was just shattered right in front of him. What else was he supposed to think?

Rantaro finally opened his eyes rubbing his head with one hand. His eyes went wide and a small smile crept on his face looking around the cafe. It was so beautiful. He looked over to Kokichi, who just looked shocked and disturbed. "Kokichi are you alright..." he muttered softly still trying to wrap his head around everything, completely forgetting the fact that this meant that Kokichi was his soulmate.

Kokichi seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in and his mouth formed a wide mischievous smile. "Nishishish aww how cute my soulmate is already questioning things!" It came out as more of a desperate attempt at convincing Rantaro of something. "Hey hey, something obviously wrong I-" Kokichi cut him off "nope! Ding, ding, ding. You're wrong! Don't look too deep into things, you'll get even more of a headache!"

Kokichi didn't sound much better, Rantaro sighed " whatever let's just pack up. I'll give you my number so we can talk about this later." Rantaro quickly wrote his number on a piece of paper giving it to Kokichi. By the time he gave it to Kokichi, the boy was already packed up and ready to head to the door. He quickly took it and ran out. "Excuse me, sir, the store is closing soon," the barista said. Rantaro nodded getting his things packed up.

Kokichi ran halfway to his home. Stopping to lean on a lamp post to catch his breath, he squeezed the piece of paper Rantaro gave him in his hand. He angrily kicked a rock, there is no way this is happening. He felt like was having a meltdown, what the fuck is going to happen now?!? He slides down the wall of some building nearby. Wiping his face, pulling out his phone. He carefully copied down the number on the paper.

Heyyyyy. I don't think I need to say my name you know who I am nishishi!
