It seemed like yesterday that Alexander had received that horrible letter from South Carolina. A new one came this morning; but it was from Virginia...
Alexander had been working at his desk when Thomas slowly crept into the room. Alex put down his papers and smiled before looking up at his boyfriend, "Tom, dear, what do-" His facial expression quickly turned from joyous to distressed in a split second. "Thomas, what is it?" A tear fell down Thomas' cheek as he passed the letter over to Alex with an unstable hand. The letter was addressed to him. There were two separate pieces of paper. One from Mr. Washington, and one from Mrs. Washington. Alex opened Mrs. Washington's first. When he read the first line, he couldn't believe it. George Washington was dead. With a red, tear soaked face Alex quickly opened the other piece of parchment addressed to him.
Dear Alexander,
I had hoped that when the time had arrived for me to write this letter to you, it would not have arrived so quickly. Although it is most unfortunate, I am unwell, and I am afraid that I may not be here for much longer.
Son, I want you to know that I cared deeply for you. Although I may never truly understand your ideas, you were like a real son to me, and I am so grateful that you were apart of my long, happy life.
Nevertheless, I am aware of the unconscious, and intentional errors that I may have placed on you. And I'm sorry. I hope that you can someday forgive me.
You shall not worry about me, for I am now awaiting a peaceful life in the skies up above. For now, I will wait for all of my loved ones in the afterlife.Yours truly,
George WashingtonAlex had completely broken down, "Don't call me son!" He was throwing unused parchment and quills on the floor. Breaking his favorite pens. Sending flying chairs across the room. Thomas even had to duck a few times to avoid receiving a blow to the head. Alexander had gone completely out of control. Thomas tried to help him, but Alex sat in the corner and refused. Thomas decided to leave him alone for a few moments. He went downstairs and made some tea. As he stirred in the sugar, Thomas noticed that Alex's ruckus has stopped. He slowly opened the door and saw Alex sitting in the middle of the room clutching Washington's letter in his hand. Thomas wrapped his arms around Alex's waist, as Alex buried his head into Thomas' chest. They stayed that way for a few moments until Alex looked up to the ceiling. He opened his eyes, and stated in a croaking voice, "Call me son one more time," before blacking out.
